World Children's Day – Celebrated Globally

World Children's Day has been celebrated in Germany on September 20th since 1989 – as a reference to the 1989 UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Over 130 countries observe the day in various forms. In Potsdam, the state capital of Brandenburg, the event has become a firm fixture for families.

Programme on Luisenplatz

Luisenplatz is located near the Brandenburg Gate (the Potsdam one, not to be confused with the Berlin one) and is one of the city's central squares. From 1 PM to 8 PM on September 20, 2026, it will transform into a playground for the whole family:

• Carousels and rides for children
• Bouncy castles in various sizes
• Interactive games and activity stations
• Craft activities – creative workshops for young artists
• Stage programme with children's theatre, music, and dance
• Diverse gastronomy
• Free entertainment – game leaders will guide the activities

Free Admission

The entire day is free – free admission, many hands-on activities also free. The organiser is ALD-Event in cooperation with the City of Potsdam.

Potsdam and Children's Rights

The City of Potsdam is committed to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and uses World Children's Day to strengthen the visibility of children's rights in public spaces. In the district of Potsdam (a city without a district) and throughout the capital region, the family festival is an important date in urban children's and youth policy.
