Regional market of the Südschwarzwald Nature Park — Enjoy homeland at the Mühlenplatz
The Naturpark Südschwarzwald e.V. organizes a full season of Nature Park Markets in cooperation with municipalities and producers — in 2026, there will be 36 dates in various Black Forest communities. The concept is clear: regional products, artisanal goods, no industrial trinkets. Every market vendor must produce their goods themselves or sell directly from their farm — a strict selection process that guarantees the market's character and quality.
The Mühlenplatz in the center of Unterkirnach serves as the venue for this Nature Park Market. In 2026, the market opens on Sunday, July 5, around 11 AM. The stalls offer the typical range of Nature Park products: Black Forest ham and smoked meats, sausages and cured meats, cheese from Black Forest dairies, wood-fired bread, honey from local beekeepers, schnapps from Black Forest distilleries (cherry, Williams pear, mirabelle plum, damson plum), berries and juices, plus handcrafted items: wood carvings, Black Forest shingles, ceramics, textiles with wooden buttons and traditional motifs.
The motto of the Nature Park Markets — “Heimat genießen” (Enjoy Homeland) — is the program. Unlike the large tourist markets in the main Black Forest towns, the Nature Park Markets are often smaller, more intimate, with a family atmosphere. They cater to locals and tourists alike, serving as a meeting place between producers and consumers. The stalls offer tastings, product explanations, and direct sales, often with the opportunity to meet the producer personally.
Unterkirnach, with around 2,500 inhabitants, is a Black Forest community in the Schwarzwald-Baar district of the state of Baden-Württemberg, located in the southern central Black Forest. The village is primarily known for its Toy Museum (Black Forest Toy Culture) and its location on the Westweg, the main long-distance hiking trail of the Black Forest. The Mühlenplatz in the town center is the natural stage for markets and village festivals; the Nature Park Market utilizes this space for a summer Sunday in the typical Black Forest style.
The Naturpark-Markt Unterkirnach fills the Mühlenplatz on Sunday with stalls exclusively from certified regional producers of the Südschwarzwald Nature Park. The Nature Park's exclusion policy (no resellers, only self-producing vendors) guarantees the authenticity of the market offerings.
Throughout Sunday afternoon, the market offers tastings, direct sales, and conversations with producers — from Black Forest beekeepers and woodcarvers to dairies. Food and drinks are available on-site; many visitors combine their market visit with a hike or an excursion to the surrounding area (Westweg trail, Toy Museum, Triberg Waterfalls in the region).
Free admission. Direct sales from producers at producer prices. Food and drinks on-site at usual market prices (bratwurst approx. €3.50–€4.50, wood-fired bread approx. €3–€5 per loaf, honey from approx. €7 per jar, Black Forest schnapps 0.1 liter from approx. €4–€6).
Unterkirnach is accessible via the B 33 highway, from Villingen-Schwenningen via the L 181, or from Triberg via the L 181. By train to Villingen main station, then take bus 7290 to Unterkirnach. Parking available near the Mühlenplatz in the town area.
Sunday, July 5, 2026, opening around 11:00 AM, market typically runs until late afternoon.
Free admission. Food, drinks, and tastings are paid for individually. Direct sales from producers at producer prices.
