Traditional Christmas Market in the Black Forest around the Münster
Villingen is the historically older of the two town centers of Villingen-Schwenningen — a twin city formed from two once-independent medieval towns that merged in 1972 to become the largest city in the Schwarzwald-Baar district. Villingen's inner city is surrounded by a medieval town wall, its main streets intersect at the Münsterplatz in front of the Romanesque-Gothic Münster „Unserer Lieben Frau". This square is also the venue for the traditional Christmas market.
The 2026 Christmas market runs for ten days from Friday, December 4th, to Sunday, December 13th. The opening hours are: Monday to Saturday 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM, Sunday 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM. It is one of the longest-running Christmas markets in the region, occupying a central date in the pre-Christmas season.
The stalls are characterized by arts and crafts — turners, sculptors, ceramists, jewelers, wood carvers, toy makers, and textile artisans display their works. Many exhibitors come from the Black Forest and the Baar region. Particularly sought after are the hand-carved nativity figures, Black Forest cuckoo clocks, blown glass items, and incense smokers.
Culinary offerings are dominated by regional specialties: Black Forest ham, smoked cheese from the Swabian Jura and the Black Forest, hearty Maultaschen, Schupfnudeln, Bratwurst, and fries. Sweet treats include Black Forest cherry cake, candied almonds, chocolate, and baked apples. Hot drinks feature mulled wine in the typical Villingen collectible mug, apple punch, children's punch, and hot mead. Vegetarian and vegan options are indicated on the signs.
The Münster and the market square are bathed in warm light — a highlight for photographers. Concerts take place several times a week, often featuring Black Forest choirs, brass quartets, and church music in the Münster. A carousel and a children's carousel also bring joy to families. St. Nicholas strolls through the market on December 6th and visits children at several stations.
