Overview

The 13th edition of the Afrika Festival Potsdam/Brandenburg took place on July 19 and 20, 2024, themed "Sustainability of African history, culture & heritage". Several thousand visitors came to Luisenplatz to experience African live music (from traditional rhythms to modern Afrobeats), dance performances, fashion shows, and a street food mile with specialties from across the continent. Charity Okezie-Andesine, ICDI founder, emphasized in her opening speech the growing importance of the festival for intercultural Potsdam.

In July 2024, the 13th edition of the Afrika Festival in Potsdam took place under a special focus: The theme "Sustainability of African history, culture & heritage" centered on the preservation of African cultural assets. Luisenplatz was filled with several thousand visitors over both days — Afro-German families from Berlin and Brandenburg, Potsdam residents, tourists, and curious first-time visitors.

Highlights included the live music stage with bands ranging from Highlife to Afrobeats acts, dance workshops for the audience, and the fashion show on Sunday afternoon, which featured African designers from Berlin and Lagos. The street food mile with Jollof Rice, Suya, Plantains, and Ethiopian Injera was well-attended both days. The traditional parade through Brandenburger Straße in colorful African attire was one of the most photographed moments — and underscored the message that Potsdam is more than just Sanssouci.
