Three Days of Culture in the Heart of the Märkische City
is'kult is Iserlohn's young summer festival, which first took place in 2024 and has quickly established itself as a fixture in the event calendar of Südwestfalen within a few years. It is organised by the Förderverein Kulturszene Iserlohn (Friends of the Iserlohn Cultural Scene Association) in collaboration with the City of Iserlohn, the Parktheater, and numerous cultural creators from the region. The 3rd edition, from June 12th to 14th, 2026, will bring music, literature, dance, cabaret, and visual arts to the entire city centre — from Schillerplatz to the Oberste Stadtkirche and the Culture Station at the Parktheater.
Open-Air Stage and Festival Ticket
The centrepiece remains the free open-air stage in the city centre: three days of continuous programming featuring regional bands, dance groups, and performances, with no admission fee and no pre-registration required. New for 2026 is the Festival Ticket for 20 Euros — it opens the door to premium indoor events on Friday and Saturday evenings, which would otherwise be significantly more expensive individually. The association sees the festival ticket "as a contribution to supporting the local cultural scene," according to the city's press release.
Premium Programme Highlights 2026
- Wine Tasting with Sommelier Maria Overberg — Friday and Saturday, 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM each day (limited places, registration required)
- Reiner Hänsch Concert — Friday, 8:00 PM, Oberste Stadtkirche
- Aftershow with Cover Band COVERNATIXX — Friday, 9:00 PM to 1:00 AM
- Crime Fiction Reading with Rudi Müllenbach — Saturday, 4:00 PM
- Silent Party at the Culture Station — Saturday, from 8:30 PM
Europe Lounge and Partner Cities
A special feature of is'kult is its international component: artists from Iserlohn's partner cities Auchel (Northern France), Nyíregyháza (Hungary), and Chorzów (Poland) travel each year and perform alongside local acts. In 2026, the Europe Lounge will be created for the first time — a dedicated meeting point for exchange between the cities, featuring music, discussions, and culinary specialities from the partner countries.
Venues Spread Across the City Centre
Unlike a traditional festival site, is'kult utilises the entire city: the open-air stage in the centre, the Parktheater Iserlohn, the Oberste Stadtkirche, the Culture Station, the City Museum, and several pubs and cafés become stages. You stroll on foot from one programme item to the next — the charm lies in wandering through a city that has completely switched to culture for three days.
Iserlohn as a Cultural Hub
Iserlohn, the largest city in the Märkischer Kreis with around 90,000 inhabitants, might not be the first place that comes to mind when thinking of a "cultural capital" — but that's precisely why is'kult works. The festival builds on a vibrant local scene, from the Parktheater and the City Museum to independent initiatives, and makes it visible to a broad audience. Anyone wanting to experience Südwestfalen beyond the usual Sauerland clichés will find the perfect weekend here.
