Ilsfelder Holzmarkt — Market with 500 Years of History
The Ilsfelder Holzmarkt is one of the oldest continuously celebrated markets in Baden-Württemberg. Since 1521, it has taken place annually around St. Bartholomew's Day (August 24) on the last weekend of August — thus from August 28 to 31, 2026. Four days of market, festival tent, craft market, and Trachten-Kirchweih. Marktstraße and the area around the Steinbeisschulzentrum form the festival grounds.
Why „Holzmarkt“? — The Historical Function
The name reveals its original function: Ilsfeld is located on the edge of the forest regions of Schwäbisch-Fränkischer Wald and Stromberg, and in the Middle Ages and early modern period, the market was the central trading place for wood products: construction timber, firewood, ladders, vineyard stakes (for the Württemberg wine-growing regions around Heilbronn), basketry, tool handles. To this day, traders from the forest regions come with their products — the traditional timber trade has been preserved, even if it now serves more as a nostalgic backdrop than the economic backbone of the market's appearance.
The Krämermarkt — What You'll Find Today
Besides wood products, the classic Krämermarkt (craft market) unfolds on Marktstraße with:
- Fabrics, clothing, shoes, leather goods
- Household items, kitchen equipment, tools
- Sweets, smoked fish, sausages, regional products
- Honey, candles, jewelry, toys
- Plants and seeds
A total of several hundred stalls are spread across the festival weekend. Thursday (opening day) and Friday are generally quieter, while Saturday and Sunday are bustling with market and festival activities.
The Festzelt — Lausbuba, Partyschwaben, and Co.
In the large Festzelt (festival tent) at the Steinbeisschulzentrum, oompah bands play every evening. Among others announced are the popular Die Lausbuba and Partyschwaben, known for filling festival tents in the region. Catering is provided by Ilsfeld associations and businesses — bratwurst, spit-roasted pork, Maultaschen, fries, draft beer, and Swabian wine.
Trachten-Kirchweih — The Tradition Strand
The Holzmarkt is organically linked with the Trachten-Kirchweih, the church consecration festival of the Ilsfeld Protestant parish. People in traditional costumes parade through the town on Sunday, and the church consecration service takes place on Sunday morning. The connection between the market and the church festival has a special depth in Ilsfeld — St. Bartholomew's Church, whose feast day (August 24) determines the market date, was historically the spiritual center of village life, and the market and church were always considered together.
Ilsfeld — The Market Town on the Edge of the Stromberg
Ilsfeld is located in the district of Heilbronn, about 15 km south of the city of Heilbronn, on the eastern edge of the Stromberg and at the northern threshold to the Schwäbisch-Fränkischer Wald. With a good 8,000 inhabitants, Ilsfeld is a small municipality — but the Holzmarkt is a well-known name in the wider area from Heilbronn to Stuttgart, and thousands of visitors commute to the town, especially on the main weekend market days.
