Historical Robber Festival with Craftsmen and Farmers' Market in the Medieval Town Center
Few town centers in Rhineland-Palatinate are as well-preserved as that of Herrstein. Half-timbered houses from the late Middle Ages, a 13th-century clock tower, the blacksmith's barn, and the castle square form a backdrop that could hardly be a better stage for a historical robber festival. It is precisely this atmosphere that the Schinderhannes-Räuberfest utilizes, bringing the life of the early 19th century back to the Hunsrück for a weekend in September.
Over one hundred craftspeople and farmers have set up in Herrstein; they come year after year from the Hunsrück, the Eifel, the Saarland, and the Palatinate, working at open workshops. Potters shape bowls, basket weavers bind willow, bookbinders create notebooks, soap makers pour handmade pieces. In addition, farming families sell regional sausages and cheese, beekeepers offer honey and mead, and brewers pour beer according to old recipes. The stalls are spread throughout the narrow alleys and around the market square, making the stroll itself an experience.
Street musicians with hurdy-gurdies, bagpipes, and old string instruments contribute to the atmosphere, along with jugglers, jesters, stilt walkers, and fire artists, who especially attract large crowds on Saturday evenings with spectacular fire shows. Robber groups in historical costumes stage ambushes and theatrical scenes from the life of Schinderhannes. The family program is also extensive: children can try their hand at pottery, bake bread, shoot arrows, or participate in costume activities at several hands-on stations. Admission to the festival is free; only food and the purchase of craft products at the stalls are subject to a charge.
The festival activities are spread throughout the entire historic town center. The castle square hosts the larger stage acts and robber reenactments, the alleys are lined with craft stalls, and the market square features the farmers' stalls with sausages, cheese, honey, mead, and beer. Several inns in the town center offer additional catering. The hands-on stations for children are concentrated around the blacksmith's barn.
