Rotating wine service series every second Thursday evening from May to September at the historic Graulturm
The Graulturm in Gau-Algesheim is a medieval watchtower dating back to the 13th century, one of the best-preserved towers of the former town fortifications. At the foot of the tower, on the street Auf der Bleiche, lies a small square that is ideal for the summer event series Donnerstags am Graulturm: centrally located, protected by walls and trees, and with ample space for stalls, seating, and relaxed lingering.
The concept is wonderfully simple and precisely why it's so successful: Every second Thursday evening from May to September, a different winery or local organization takes over the catering. From 5 to 9 PM, wines are served, accompanied by small dishes – sometimes Flammkuchen, sometimes quiche, sometimes regional sausage and cheese variations. Visitors meet for a post-work glass of wine, make connections, and sit on beer benches or stand with a glass in hand.
The rotation is part of the appeal: the organizer changes every second Thursday, allowing visitors to get to know the different wineries and their styles over the course of the season. For the wineries, it's a welcome opportunity to present themselves to the public in a prominent location – beyond the major festival dates.
The audience is a mix of Gau-Algesheim locals, who have their regular Thursday evening rendezvous here, and visitors from the surrounding area – from Mainz, Bingen, Ingelheim, and the surrounding Rheinhessen villages. Those who attend once usually return, and thus a network of loosely connected regulars has developed from the concept.
Donnerstags am Graulturm exemplifies how a simple concept – wine, place, and rotation – can become a vibrant part of the cultural summer in a Rheinhessen wine town. The event embodies the region's lifestyle: cozy, unpretentious, with excellent wines and a willingness to spend time together.
The 2026 season includes ten Thursday dates. On each date, a different winery or organization handles the wine service. Free admission, pay for consumption at daily rates.
The exact assignment of dates to wineries and associations will be published by the City of Gau-Algesheim and Rheinhessen Touristik in spring. The structure (every two weeks on Thursdays, 5–9 PM) follows the proven framework of previous years.
