Holunderfest Ammerndorf — Bavaria's Largest Elderflower Festival
Ammerndorf is a small market town in the District of Fürth in the Bavarian administrative region of Middle Franconia, located west of Fürth and Nuremberg in the Rangau region. Its Holunderfest has evolved from a small club meeting into Bavaria's largest elderflower festival — a celebration dedicated to the elderflower (Franconian "Holler").
From Blossom Gathering to Major Event
It all began in the early 2000s as a small gathering to collect elderflower blossoms. Today, the Holunderfest has grown into a community event comparable in significance to the town's traditional Kärwa (church fair). Those interested can help the collection team gather elderflower umbels — a living example of club and traditional culture.
Elderflower Specialties
Culinary delights revolve entirely around elderflower: the star of the festival is the freshly baked Hollerküchle (elderflower umbels fried in batter), for which long queues regularly form. Accompanying these are Hollerkuchen (elderflower cake), elderflower liqueur and schnapps, elderflower cordial, and freshly tapped beer from the local brewery.
Festival at the Dreschmaschinenhaus
The venue is the Dreschmaschinenhaus on Vogtsreichenbacher Straße — an atmospheric location that reflects the area's agricultural heritage. The event is organized by the Heimat- und Gartenbauverein Ammerndorf; admission is free.
Ammerndorf in Rangau
The market town of Ammerndorf is situated in Rangau, the wooded hilly landscape west of Nuremberg and Fürth. The Holunderfest is an expression of vibrant club and traditional culture and a tourist attraction for the entire District of Fürth in early summer.
