Franconian Kärwa with Ammerndorfer Beer in the Fürth district
Ammerndorf is a market town with around 2,500 inhabitants in the district of Fürth, west of Nuremberg, in the heart of the traditional Franconian brewery and Kärwa region. For centuries, the Kirchweih has been the social highlight of the summer here – a typical example of that Middle Franconian Kärwa culture which shapes village life for decades with the raising of the Kärwabaum, a parade, traditional costumes of the Kärwa-Madli (fairground girls) and Kärwaburschen (fairground boys), and nightly beer tent festivities.
The Dullikener Platz fairground in the town center becomes the focal point over the Kärwa weekend: a large beer tent with a festival band, several beer and snack stalls, children's carousels, and amusement rides are part of the standard setup. The Ammerndorfer beer, brewed in the private Ammerndorf brewery, which has been under local ownership since 1730 and is one of the oldest private breweries in Franconia, forms the culinary core. Served fresh from the tap in a jug, it is one of the local icons of the Fürth district.
Programmatically, the Kärwa follows the usual Franconian schedule: tapping of the first barrel and raising of the Kärwabaum on Friday, the main festival day with a performance by the Kärwa-Madli on Saturday, a morning pint with brass music on Sunday, and the traditional »Kärwa-Ausklang« (Kärwa finale) on Monday – during the so-called »Kärwa-Beerdigung« (Kärwa funeral), the end of the festival days is symbolically celebrated.
With the date set for July 3–6, 2026, the Ammerndorfer Kärwa continues its firm place in the Kärwa calendar of the Fürth district. The opening on Friday traditionally includes the tapping of the first barrel of Ammerndorfer beer by the mayor and the raising of the Kärwabaum by the Kärwaburschen. Saturday focuses on the grand festival evening: live band in the beer tent, dancing, and Franconian delicacies ranging from bratwurst and Schäuferla to Kärwa-Krapfen.
Sunday features the traditional morning pint with brass music, followed in the afternoon by a parade of the Kärwaburschen and -madli in traditional costume through the town center. Kärwa Monday, usually celebrated as a family day in Middle Franconia, concludes the festival cycle with the »Betzentanz« around the Kärwabaum and the symbolic »Kärwa-Beerdigung« on the night leading into Tuesday.
