Sword art, Baroque music, open-air cinema, medieval markets — the Hohenzollern castle's annual program
Burg Cadolzburg is located 25 km west of Nuremberg, high above the market square of Cadolzburg in the Fürth district. It is one of the best-preserved castles in Middle Franconia and houses the experience museum HerrschaftsZeiten! Erlebnis Cadolzburg, supported by the Free State of Bavaria. Throughout the year, the Bavarian Administration of Palaces, Gardens and Lakes organizes a remarkable series of public programs here — a mix of concerts, medieval events, cinema, and markets that utilize the entire site, making it a venue for events beyond just a museum.
To kick off the season, the group Schwertkunst im Burggraben will demonstrate historical combat techniques in the castle moat from May 26 to 31, 2026 — sword fighting, staff combat, medieval self-defense. The demonstrations are included in the regular museum admission fee.
On June 14, 2026, at 7 PM, duo mélange (flute and marimba) will perform the program 'On the Road ... through different eras and across continents'. On July 10, 2026, at 7:30 PM, the ensemble Nürnberg Barock will give a concert in honor of the composer Johann Georg Pisendel. Both concerts: €20 (reduced €10).
On Friday, August 21, and Saturday, August 22, 2026, the castle courtyard will transform into an open-air cinema. The Burg-Lichtspiele (Castle Film Nights) will show surprise films based on the annual motto 'On the Road'. Admission is free, online reservation required (limited seats).
On September 5 and 6, 2026, the group Nürnberger Aufgebot 1474 will bring the castle to life with demonstrations of medieval crafts and combat techniques. Blacksmiths, archers, swordsmen, artisans at work — a weekend of hands-on medieval experience. Free access to the outer bailey, inner castle via museum admission.
On September 26 and 27, 2026, the Herbstmarkt (Autumn Market) featuring blacksmithing (Thomas Hürner and Jasmin List) and stonemasonry (Armin Reicherl and Pauline Schöner) will take place in the inner castle courtyard. On October 9, 2026, the quiz 'Die Ritter der Raterunde' (The Knights of the Guessing Round) will conclude the event season — a humorous knowledge quiz for historically interested castle fans.
The 2026 season is listed in the official event calendar of the Bavarian Administration of Palaces, Gardens and Lakes (burg-cadolzburg.de). The eight public programs are spread over five months and cover the main themes of the castle's educational outreach: courtly music, medieval crafts and combat techniques, open-air cinema, regional craft markets.
Concert tickets can be purchased online or at the museum ticket office. For the Castle Film Nights, a free online reservation is required (limited seating in the courtyard). Most other programs are included in the regular museum admission fee.
