About Holstenköste
Holstenköste — edition 2026
The Anniversary Edition
The 50th Holstenköste from June 11th to 14th, 2026, elevates the city festival to a new level. The city of Neumünster actively sought co-organizers in the run-up to appropriately celebrate the half-century since its first edition in 1976. Around 200,000 visitors are expected again over the four festival days.
The Festival Concept
The festival mile stretches through the entire city centre with the classic locations: main stage at Großflecken, Junge Bühne for emerging talent, concerts in Gerisch Park, flea market at Kleinflecken, and medieval market with craft demonstrations. The awareness teams in purple vests will be present again.

The City Festival That Shapes Neumünster
The Holstenköste is more than a city festival – it is the social heart of Neumünster in the district of Neumünster (independent city) in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. Since 1976, the four-day festival has attracted around 200,000 visitors to the city centre every year on the second weekend in June, making it the second-largest city festival in Schleswig-Holstein – only the Kieler Woche surpasses it in size. Here, you'll experience a characteristic mix of Northern German Volksfest (popular festival) atmosphere, live music, and encounters across all generations.
The Anniversary: 50 Years of Holstenköste
In 2026, the Holstenköste celebrates its 50th edition – a milestone that the city of Neumünster will mark with an enhanced programme. Already in 2025, the predecessor edition under the motto "Sonnenköste" attracted around 240,000 visitors and is considered the best-attended edition in recent history. For 2026, the city is actively seeking additional co-organizers to appropriately honour the anniversary.
The Festival Mile
The festival area extends across the entire city centre: from the Großflecken as the central square, through the Kleinflecken, to the grounds along Teichufer. Several stages are spread throughout the city centre – historically, there were up to eight stages, including the main stage of VR Bank, the Galerie stage, the Klosterinsel stage, the SHNetzAG/Gerisch stage, and the Junge Bühne (Young Stage) for emerging talent. The musical spectrum ranges from rock and pop to Schlager and brass and folk music.
More Than Just Music
- Holstenköstenlauf – the running event with the 10 km race is now a firm fixture and recorded a record 3,817 participants in 2025
- Flea Market on Kleinflecken
- Amusement Rides and Showmen with a Ferris wheel, carousels, and classic Volksfest attractions
- Medieval Market with jugglers and crafts
- Ecumenical Service on Sunday morning – a firmly established tradition since the beginning
- ADAC Vintage Car Parade with classic cars through the city centre
- Concerts in Gerisch Park as a quiet counterpoint to the festival mile
Safety and Awareness
Since 2024, the city of Neumünster has relied on awareness teams in purple vests, who are particularly approachable for young women and provide assistance when needed. The Junge Bühne has also been established as an alcohol-free meeting point for young people – a conscious statement for an inclusive festival.
Tradition Meets Modernity
The opening has always belonged to the Neumünster guilds and the Mädchenmusikkorps (girls' music corps), who march in a ceremonial procession from Kleinflecken through the Teichufer grounds to the town hall. The Holstenköste combines this traditional element with modern programme points, remaining a city festival supported and shaped by the community.
