Christmas Village at Großflecken

The Großflecken — Neumünster's central square in the historic city center — is transformed into a Christmas village every year starting in mid-November. Wooden stalls, fairy lights, a giant Christmas tree, and the characteristic scent of roasted almonds, mulled wine, and incense define the atmosphere for the coming weeks.

5 Weeks of Advent Spirit

The program runs daily for over five weeks — from November 19 to December 23, 2026. The opening hours are staggered to be family-friendly:

• Monday to Wednesday — 11:00 AM to 8:30 PM
• Thursday to Saturday — 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM
• Sunday — 12:00 PM to 8:30 PM

375 sqm Synthetic Ice Rink

What particularly distinguishes Neumünster from other Christmas markets is the 375 sqm ice rink with high-quality synthetic ice — a plastic-based surface that works without a cooling system. This is more sustainable than traditional water ice rinks, holds up in mild temperatures, and has a genuine ice feel. In 2026, an additional catchment system for ice particles was installed.

Ice Stock Sport and Ice Princess

Traditional ice stock sport tournaments also take place on the ice rink — a competition for teams, traditionally originating from Southern Germany and the Alpine region, but also functional in Northern Germany on the synthetic ice rink. In addition, smaller performances like the Ice Princess enchant children and families with classic figure skating choreographies.

Sponsorship and Patrons

The operator of the ice rink is the Kreissportverband Neumünster (KSV), which ensures daily operations with volunteer staff. Eight local sponsors — including the Stadtwerke Neumünster and the Sparkasse Südholstein — finance the concept.

Neumünster — Independent City in Schleswig-Holstein

With around 80,000 inhabitants, Neumünster is the fourth-largest city in Schleswig-Holstein and one of the state's four independent cities (Code 01004). Strategically located between Hamburg, Kiel, and Lübeck, it is the economic center of South Holstein. The Christmas market at Großflecken is the most important meeting point in the city center during Advent — a place for hometown reunions and family gatherings.
