Run and Volksfest in One
The Holstenköstenlauf is a North German specialty: a city run that is directly embedded in Neumünster's largest event. While the stages of the Holstenköste are already being set up and the first stalls are opening, thousands run through the festival grounds — past food stands, carousels, and the early festival mile atmosphere. This gives the run a character that classic public runs do not have.
The Routes
The event is organized by SVT Neumünster von 1911 e.V. in cooperation with BMS Die Laufgesellschaft mbH. Five competitions are offered for different age groups and performance levels:
- Bäcker-Andresen-Lauf over 10 km — the main route
- Holsten-Galerie-Lauf over 5 km — the beginner's run
- Schülerlauf (schoolchildren's run) over 1.3 km
- Bambinilauf (toddler's run) over 300 m
- Handicap-Lauf (handicap run) over 800 m
The route leads from Kleinflecken through the city center, further through Tungendorf and Brachenfeld, and back. A section runs along the closed-off festival mile of the Holstenköste — a moment that regular runners particularly appreciate.
Record Edition 2025 as a Benchmark
With 3,817 participants, the 35th edition in 2025 set a new course record — around 650 more than the previous year. For women, Julia Kümpers set a new course record on the 10 km distance with 35:08 minutes. These figures make the Holstenköstenlauf the largest public run in Middle Holstein.
In the District of Neumünster
The run takes place in the independent city of Neumünster in the state of Schleswig-Holstein — conveniently located on the A7 motorway between Hamburg and Flensburg. For many runners from the Hamburg commuter belt and the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district, it is a firm fixture in the season's calendar.

The 36th Edition in 2026
On Friday, June 12, 2026, the starting gun will fire for the 36th Holstenköstenlauf at Kleinflecken Neumünster. The run is organized by SVT Neumünster von 1911 e.V. in cooperation with BMS Die Laufgesellschaft mbH. The route leads through the city center and the districts of Tungendorf and Brachenfeld, returning to the festival area — coordinated with the setup for the Holstenköste, which begins shortly before.
Embedded in the Holstenköste Kick-off
The run traditionally marks the sporting start of the four-day festival and partly follows its course through the festival grounds, which will open to the public a few hours later. This integration makes the Holstenköstenlauf a competition with a special atmosphere.
Programme Holstenköstenlauf 2026
The competitions for the 36th edition will be held in staggered starts between 2:00 PM and 7:00 PM. Based on experience, the schedule is as follows:
Friday, June 12, 2026 — Kleinflecken
- From 2:00 PM — Arrival, bib collection, and warm-up program
- Bambinilauf (300 m) — Afternoon
- Schülerlauf (1.3 km) — Afternoon
- Handicap-Lauf (800 m)
- Holsten-Galerie-Lauf over 5 km
- Bäcker-Andresen-Lauf over 10 km — Main run in the late afternoon
- Award ceremonies immediately following each respective race at Kleinflecken

Getting There
By train, Neumünster is an ICE/IC hub — direct connections from Hamburg (35 min), Kiel (20 min), and Flensburg. The main train station is a five-minute walk from Kleinflecken. By car via the A7 (exit Neumünster-Süd or -Nord). During the run and the Holstenköste, the central streets around Großflecken are closed — use parking lots on the outskirts.
