Traditional summer festival of the Fichtelgebirgsverein at Hammerrang
The FGV Birkl-Fest is organized by the Fichtelgebirgsverein Waldershof and continues an old Waldershof festival tradition. As early as 1907, the beautification association and the local gymnastics club first celebrated at Hammerrang, and until 1961, the people of Waldershof celebrated the Hammerrangfest here. With the construction of the FGV cellar, which was inaugurated on May 31, 1984, the Fichtelgebirgsverein revived the tradition as the Birkl-Fest.
The venue is Hammerrang, a wooded area on the outskirts of Waldershof, which a beautification association planted with birch trees in 1902 – hence the name Birkl-Fest. Around the cozy FGV cellar with a serving room, the association invites guests for hospitality with beer, hearty food, coffee and cake, as well as live music. The shady location under the birch trees makes the festival a popular destination for families, hikers, and club members.
The Fichtelgebirgsverein is one of the most traditional local and hiking clubs in Northern Bavaria. With the Birkl-Fest, the Waldershof local group cultivates sociability, local pride, and the volunteer commitment that defines the club. The proceeds benefit the club's work and the maintenance of the Hammerrang grounds.
Waldershof is located in the Tirschenreuth district in the Upper Palatinate administrative region of the Free State of Bavaria, on the edge of the Fichtelgebirge between Marktredwitz and Kemnath. The wooded low mountain range landscape makes Hammerrang an attractive destination for a summer festival visit.
The FGV Birkl-Fest 2026 is expected to be celebrated on Saturday, July 4, and Sunday, July 5, at Hammerrang (it took place on July 6 and 7 in 2024). The Fichtelgebirgsverein Waldershof will be serving guests around the FGV cellar with beer from the cellar, hearty food, coffee and cake. Live music and the shady spot under the birch trees will ensure a cozy summer atmosphere. The exact schedule will be announced by the town of Waldershof and the Fichtelgebirgsverein.
