Traditional Martini-Kirwa with Crafts and Culinary Delights in the Stiftland
The city of Waldershof in the Upper Palatinate district of Tirschenreuth, picturesquely located on the edge of the Steinwald and Fichtelgebirge, has been preserving its market traditions for centuries. The Martinimarkt – also known as Martini-Kirwa – is one of the most traditional markets in the region and takes place annually around St. Martin's Day (November 11th). It is closely linked to the patronage of the Catholic parish church and the agricultural cycle, where November 11th was traditionally a day for lease and wage settlements.
On the central market square, exhibitors from Waldershof and the Stiftland present their products: handmade wooden crafts, ceramics from the Tirschenreuth tradition, jewelry, textiles, and home accessories. The culinary offerings include Upper Palatinate specialties such as dumplings, rolled bratwurst, smoked sausage, regional cheese, Stiftland honey, and homemade cookies during the Advent season. Stalls with mulled wine, punch, and bratwurst provide culinary warmth in the cool November temperatures.
St. Martin's Day is a central tradition in the Catholic Upper Palatinate. As early as the Middle Ages, November 11th was a deadline for farm contracts, lease payments, and the change of maids and farmhands. The Martini-Kirwa in Waldershof combines this old agricultural tradition with the patronage of the local parish. Parents and children recall the legend of Saint Martin, who shared his cloak with a beggar – a symbol of charity that gains particular significance in the pre-Christmas season.
Waldershof, a small town with just under 4,000 inhabitants, is strategically located between the Steinwald Nature Park and the Fichtelgebirge. The town is known, among other things, for its porcelain industry, which economically shaped the Stiftland in the second half of the 19th century. A visit to the Martinimarkt can be ideally combined with a hike in the nearby Steinwald or a stop at one of the traditional Stiftland inns.
The market is family-friendly and aimed at visitors of all generations. Children enjoy the atmosphere, while adults experience Upper Palatinate tradition firsthand. Admission is free, and the market is open from 10 am to 5 pm. Shops in the town center will have special promotions running concurrently – the traditional Sunday shopping complements the market offerings.
