Dance Sport in Berlin — A Capital with Tradition
Berlin is one of the few German cities with a continuous dance sport tradition dating back to the 1920s. The Landestanzsportverband Berlin e.V. (LTV Berlin) is the responsible state association within the German Dance Sport Federation (DTV) and oversees over 60 dance sport clubs in Berlin and Brandenburg. The Berlin Dance Festival is its premium format and ranks among the major annual dance sport events at the European level.
Max-Schmeling-Halle — The Venue
The Max-Schmeling-Halle at Falkplatz in the Prenzlauer Berg district (Pankow borough) is a multi-purpose arena built in 1996/97 for Berlin's unsuccessful Olympic bid, with a capacity of around 11,900 seats. It is located between the Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Sportpark and Mauerpark and is the home venue for ALBA Berlin (basketball) and Füchse Berlin (handball). For the Berlin Dance Festival, the hall will be equipped with three parallel dance floors and will be in use continuously for three days.
2026 Format — 15 World Ranking Tournaments and 2 European Championships
The 2026 program includes 15 World DanceSport Federation (WDSF) World Ranking Tournaments and 2 WDSF European Championships. Disciplines: Ballroom (Slow Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Slow Foxtrot, Quickstep) and Latin (Samba, Cha-Cha-Cha, Rumba, Paso Doble, Jive). Additionally, 20 national junior competitions for children (from 8 years old) and youth (up to 17 years old) will take place. Approximately 800 to 1,150 dance couples from around 28 countries are expected — making the competition one of the most important international stops on the WDSF season.
Pankow as a Dance Sport District
The Pankow borough, including Prenzlauer Berg and Weißensee, has developed several dance sport structures in recent years. With the Max-Schmeling-Halle, the Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Sportpark, and its close proximity to Mauerpark, the area offers a sports cluster where the festival is logistically optimally anchored. The Berlin Dance Festival, alongside the Munich GOC and the Stuttgart German Open Championships, is one of the three major German dance sport events of the year.
