Grand festival of international military and brass music in Berlin's Max-Schmeling-Halle
The term "Tattoo" in military music has nothing to do with skin art. It originates from the Dutch "Doe den tap toe" ("Turn off the tap") – the evening command to innkeepers in garrison towns to stop serving beer to soldiers, accentuated by the playing of the garrison bands. From this military tradition, the Tattoo has evolved into today's large-scale stage format – the most famous example being the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Berlin Tattoo has been bringing this tradition to the German capital since 2017.
The 2026 edition brings together around 700 musicians from military and civilian brass ensembles from several European countries. The program includes pipe bands, Pipes & Drums, Bagpipes, Brass Bands, Field Music, Massed Pipes – a mix of military tradition, virtuosic musical art, and show. Choreographed parades, precise marching formations, and solo performances on percussion and Highland bagpipes alternate during the approximately two and a half hours.
The Max-Schmeling-Halle at Falkplatz 1 (Prenzlauer Berg district, Pankow borough) was opened in 1996 for Berlin's bid for the Olympics – which was ultimately unsuccessful. With almost 12,000 seats, it is one of the city's major event venues and is ideally suited for a show of this scale: a wide performance area in the inner ring, good sightlines, and professional lighting direction. Three performances are spread across the two days, November 7th and 8th, 2026.
Berlin Tattoo is part of a series of major German military music shows held in Hamburg, Berlin, Düsseldorf, and Munich. It is now one of the largest Tattoo formats in Central Europe and by far the largest in Berlin. The event attracts a broad audience: music lovers, families, brass enthusiasts, and those interested in military music history alike.
On the weekend of November 7th to 8th, 2026, Berlin Tattoo will once again open the Max-Schmeling-Halle for three performances of international military music.
The show brings together around 700 musicians from several European countries in a performance lasting approximately two and a half hours, featuring precise marching formations, virtuosic solo performances, Pipes & Drums, brass sections, and choreographed stage action. The organizer, Musikparade GmbH, has been organizing this format in Berlin since 2017.
The exact setlist and detailed breakdown of the three performances will be published in late summer 2026 on berlintattoo.de.
