Nationwide day of action with guided tours at historical sites in Varel
Since 1993, the Tag des offenen Denkmals has been a nationwide day of action by the German Foundation for Monument Protection, held annually on the second Sunday in September. In around 8,000 monuments across Germany, doors that usually remain closed open up.
Varel boasts a rich historical heritage: the 14th-century Schlosskirche with its distinctive tower, the former moated castle, the Varel Windmill, the historical weaving mill as an industrial monument, and the Sielort Dangast as the oldest North Sea resort on Germany's west coast. The Monument Day makes this diversity tangible.
Guided tours take place at the participating sites, often led by volunteer experts, local historians, or restorers. Lectures complement the program, offering deeper insights into the restoration, history, and cultural significance of the monuments.
The Varel Schlosskirche and the adjacent Schlossplatz are the historical heart of the city. On Monument Day, the program includes tower climbs, crypt tours, and special explanations of the architecture.
The Varel Windmill on Mühlenstraße and the historical weaving mill on Oldenburger Straße are first-class technical monuments. On Monument Day, they are made accessible to visitors, often with demonstrations of milling or weaving techniques.
The 2026 edition continues the annual tradition. The German Foundation for Monument Protection sets an annual theme to which the participating sites align thematically.
The monuments of Varel tell the story of a city whose roots reach back to the Middle Ages and which, with Dangast, hosts the oldest North Sea resort on Germany's west coast.
