Nationwide Monument Day
Since 1993, the Tag des offenen Denkmals has been a nationwide day of action by the German Foundation for Monument Protection, held annually on the second Sunday in September. In around 8,000 monuments across Germany, doors that usually remain closed open up.
Varel and its Historical Heritage
Varel boasts a rich historical heritage: the 14th-century Schlosskirche with its distinctive tower, the former moated castle, the Varel Windmill, the historical weaving mill as an industrial monument, and the Sielort Dangast as the oldest North Sea resort on Germany's west coast. Guided Tours and Lectures

The Varel Windmill on Mühlenstraße and the historical weaving mill on Oldenburger Straße are first-class technical monuments. On Monument Day, they are made accessible to visitors, often with demonstrations of milling or weaving techniques.
Denkmaltag Varel — edition 2026
The 2026 edition continues the annual tradition. The German Foundation for Monument Protection sets an annual theme to which the participating sites align thematically.
The monuments of Varel tell the story of a city whose roots reach back to the Middle Ages and which, with Dangast, hosts the oldest North Sea resort on Germany's west coast.
