When the zoo becomes a ghostly landscape — two Halloween evenings between light effects, fog, and creepy figures
With over 30 hectares, ZOOM Erlebniswelt in Gelsenkirchen is one of the largest and most modern zoos in North Rhine-Westphalia. It is divided into three adventure worlds — Asia, Africa, Alaska — and welcomes thousands of visitors daily during its operating season from May to September. The Halloween season has been a distinct highlight in the event calendar for years, appealing to a deliberately different audience: families with younger children, youth groups, school class cliques looking to get scared together.
The main attraction isn't really the fright itself — it's the effect of experiencing a familiar animal environment in a completely different mood. Paths known from daytime are suddenly covered in ground fog. Sculptures that are normally hidden are staged with colored spotlights. In some places, actors in costumes appear, not dangerous, but surprising. It's not a horror park for adults, but a family experience with carefully dosed elements of fright.
Gelsenkirchen is located in the heart of the Ruhr area, in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The city is known, besides Schalke, primarily for its post-industrial transformation — a process in which the zoo is also embedded. ZOOM Erlebniswelt was created in 2005 from the Ruhr-Zoo, founded in 1949, and is today one of the region's most important family attractions. With the Halloween spectacle, it clearly positions itself in the family event sector.
The Halloween evenings have limited capacity — partly because certain paths and areas can only accommodate a specific number of visitors dramatically. Tickets go on pre-sale every year in early September and often sell out within a few weeks. Those who want to be there should plan ahead.
Unlike some "Halloween Horror Nights" formats for adults, the ZOOM version remains family-friendly: Visitors are encouraged to wear costumes (many come dressed up), parts of the animal enclosures are accessible, along with food stalls, seating areas, and Halloween-themed snacks. It's an evening for the whole family — not a maximum adrenaline experience, but a well-planned mix of fun and mild thrills.
Two Halloween evenings, 6 PM to 10 PM each — parts of the ZOOM Erlebniswelt will become a Halloween landscape. Light effects, ground fog, costumed actors, Halloween snacks. Family-friendly, with a dose of fright.
Tickets go on sale annually in early September and are, as experience shows, quickly snapped up. The Halloween Spectacle is one of the most sought-after family events in the Ruhr area in October.
