Grand Gaufest of the Lechgau Traditional Costume Association with Anniversary
The Lechgau Traditional Costume Festival is the grand Gaufest of the Lechgau Traditional Costume Association, an alliance of numerous traditional costume clubs in the Upper Bavarian Lechgau region between the Lech and Ammersee lakes. In 2026, the D'Schwalbenstoaner Hohenfurch e.V. traditional costume club will host the 100th Lechgau Traditional Costume Festival – coinciding with the club's 100th anniversary. The venue is a large festival tent in the municipality of Hohenfurch in the Weilheim-Schongau district.
The festival begins on Wednesday with the beer tapping ceremony and the Josef Menzl band in the large festival tent. Thursday is the Day of Clubs and Businesses, accompanied musically by the »Pfaffenwinkler«. Friday features a star march with a mass choir in front of the festival tent and an evening with the »Alpengruß Musikanten«. Festival Saturday starts with the convivial Lechgau Evening.
The highlight is the grand traditional costume parade on festival Sunday, where the clubs of the Lechgau march through Hohenfurch in their historical costumes. Plattler (traditional dancers), Goaßlschnalzer (whip crackers), flag bearers, and music bands make the parade an impressive showcase of Upper Bavarian folk culture, attracting thousands of visitors.
Hohenfurch is located in the Pfaffenwinkel, a region in Upper Bavaria characterized by churches, monasteries, and pre-Alpine landscapes. The Lechgau Traditional Costume Festival is an expression of the region's strong sense of home and a regionally significant major event that makes the traditional costume movement visible and tangible.
The 2026 edition is the 100th Lechgau Traditional Costume Festival and takes place from Wednesday, July 8, to Sunday, July 12, 2026, in Hohenfurch.
