Nine-day Volksfest on Münster's Schlossplatz with over 200 showmen
When spring arrives in Münsterland, the Frühjahrssend opens the season: From March 7th to 15th, 2026, the historic Schlossplatz will once again become the largest fairground in the region — with over 200 showmen and amusement rides, nine days of festivities, and an appeal that attracts up to one million visitors annually.
On this day, the offer is: Pay for one ride, get two. Visitors can get coupons via the münster:app to be redeemed at participating rides. A tradition with high public appeal, especially among families and young people.
Family Day means: 30% discount on rides and 25% discount on food and drinks. Thursday is thus specifically targeted as the busiest family day of the week.
The acoustic and visual highlight of the festival: The traditional fireworks display over Münster's palace. Thousands flock to the Schlossplatz on Friday evening, and the city center remains lively late into the night.
Both Sundays (March 8th and 15th) open their stalls in the morning: Frühschoppen with beer, Weißwurst, and pretzels in a convivial atmosphere — a Münster tradition that rounds off the festival concept.
The official list of participants is traditionally published shortly before the festival begins. Classics such as Wilde Maus, Break Dance, Disco Jet, Shock Wave, Tiki Taki XXL, Gladiator, and the new highlight Gravity Tower are expected. In addition, there are children's carousels, a Ferris wheel, haunted houses, and over a hundred food stalls — from candied almonds and crêpes to bratwurst, Schmalzkuchen, and mulled wine variations.
The term „Send“ dates back to the Middle Ages and refers to the church's Sendgerichtstag (synodal court day) — an assembly of the diocese around which markets developed. Over the centuries, these evolved into Münster's three Sende: Frühjahrssend (spring), Sommersend (summer), and Allerheiligensend (All Saints' Day). The Frühjahrssend, at nine days, is the longest and most popular.
The city of Münster (approx. 320,000 inhabitants) is the seat of the Münster administrative district and a major university city (Westphalian Wilhelms University). Famous as the City of Peace through the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, it is considered the cultural and administrative capital of Münsterland. The Schlossplatz in front of the Prince-Bishop's Palace (now the university's main building) is the city's central festival grounds.
Nine days of Münster's Volksfest tradition: More than 200 amusement rides and stalls on Schlossplatz, plus special event days and the traditional fireworks display on Friday evening. Sunday morning pint with beer and Weißwurst complements the festival concept.
