Bürgerschützenverein Bevergern since 1425 — one of Westphalia's oldest shooting traditions
The Bürgerschützenverein Bevergern, founded in 1425, is one of the oldest shooting associations in Germany. Six centuries of uninterrupted tradition — from its late medieval civil defense function, through the spiritual brotherhood of the Baroque, the bourgeois marksmen of the 19th century, to today's heritage association. From July 3 to 5, 2026, the association will host its traditional Schützenfest in the Bevergern district of the town of Hörstel — one of the oldest and most vibrant Schützenfeste in the Tecklenburger Land region.
The 2026 Schützenfest spans three days: Friday, July 3 — Opening with assembly and dance evening. Saturday, July 4 — King's shooting, coronation, and coronation ball. Sunday, July 5 — Festival service, parade through Bevergern, closing dance. In doing so, BSV Bevergern follows the classic Westphalian Schützenfest structure, which has provided stability and commitment for the club community for generations.
A special feature of the Bevergern Schützenfest is the festival decoration: Starting as early as Saturday, June 27, 2026 — almost a week before the actual festival — the assembly of shooting decorations begins in the district. Decorative chains, shooting pennants, fir trees at house entrances, and the large banner at the shooting club's local pub transform Bevergern into a decorated festival backdrop. This preparation phase is lived club work — usually carried out by older marksmen with practical experience.
BSV Bevergern has set its Schützenfest dates years in advance — an indication of close club planning. Following 2026 (July 3–5), the dates are June 25–27, 2027, and June 30–July 2, 2028. This places Bevergern firmly in the annual festival calendar of Hörstel's districts and the Tecklenburger Land region — a reliable date for shooting enthusiasts from Münster, Rheine, Ibbenbüren, and the Emsland.
Bevergern is a district of the town of Hörstel in the Steinfurt district, located on the Mittelland Canal in the Tecklenburger Land. With its medieval history (first mentioned in the 9th century), slate-roofed farmhouses, and scenic location between the canal and hills, Bevergern has retained a special charm. The Bürgerschützenverein, founded in 1425, is the most important identity-forming tradition of the district — the Schützenfest unites old and young Bevergern residents as one large family once a year.
Hörstel is a town in the Steinfurt district in northern Münsterland with around 21,000 inhabitants. The town comprises the districts of Hörstel, Riesenbeck, Dreierwalde, and Bevergern — all with their own Bürgerschützen traditions and Schützenfeste. In the Tecklenburger Land, a hilly landscape at the transition between Münsterland and Osnabrücker Land, the shooting tradition is at the core of local festival culture.
The 2026 season of BSV Bevergern culminates with the Schützenfest from July 3 to 5, 2026. The association, one of the oldest shooting associations in Germany with its founding in 1425, continues its centuries-old tradition.
Starting Saturday, June 27, 2026, the festival decorations for the Bevergern district begin — decorative chains, shooting pennants, fir trees, and banners transform the town into a decorated festival backdrop a week before the actual Schützenfest.
