18th Festival of Audio Drama and Audio Art in the Slavic Village
While audio drama festivals are rare in Germany, the Hörspielwochenende in Brandenburg an der Havel has become a regular fixture on the scene over 18 editions. The festival sees itself not as an industry meeting, but as a public experience format: Visitors lie in hammocks or loungers, close their eyes, and follow produced audio dramas, live performances, and small theatre-audio formats.
The venue is the reconstructed Slavic Village on Neuendorfer Straße, an open-air site dedicated to the early medieval Slavic history of the Havel city. Wooden houses, a central meadow, and the Havel River in the background create a special atmosphere – a venue that is ideally suited for a festival of listening. Brandenburg an der Havel was a Slavic settlement in the early Middle Ages before being integrated into the Holy Roman Empire in the 10th century; the Slavic Village makes this history tangible.
The program includes classic audio dramas, new productions, live audio plays (often with musicians and actors on stage), mini-theatre formats, and a dedicated children's program. Lauschkultur e.V. specifically promotes young regional artists and provides a platform for experimental audio formats.
The organizer is Lauschkultur e.V., founded in 2006, based in Brandenburg an der Havel. The association sees itself as an advocate for reading and audio art in the city and region and finances the festival through donations, membership fees, and sponsoring. Sponsorship levels range from 200 to 1,000 Euros with various visibility options. Volunteer work is the heart of the organization.
The Hörspielwochenende is accessible free of charge ("Free for everyone!"). Donations on site are expressly encouraged and ensure the continuation of the festival.
The 18th Hörspielwochenende will take place on Saturday, July 18, and Sunday, July 19, 2026, in the Slawendorf Brandenburg an der Havel (Neuendorfer Straße 89C). The organizer is Lauschkultur e.V., which has curated the festival since its inception. The program includes produced audio dramas, live audio plays, mini-theatre formats, and interactive formats, complemented by a children's program. The festival is accessible to the public free of charge; donations are accepted on site and are important for the continuation of volunteer work. The atmosphere in the reconstructed Slavic Village – with wooden houses, campfires, and a view of the Havel – makes the festival a special experience for everyone who wants to engage in active listening.
