The Pentecost Festival of Rock Hard Magazine at the Gelsenkirchen Amphitheater
The Rock Hard Festival is the live calling card of the eponymous Rock Hard Magazine — the oldest and most influential German metal magazine, founded in 1983 in the Ruhr area. Since 2003, the editorial team has been organizing a three-day Pentecost festival at the Gelsenkirchen Amphitheater with an uncompromising focus on Heavy Metal, classic rock, and progressive subgenres. The 35th edition runs from Friday, May 22nd, to Sunday, May 24th, 2026.
With the 2026 edition, the organizers present a program that connects different metal generations. Headliners and key acts include:
The Gelsenkirchen Amphitheater was built in 1999 for the State Garden Show in the reclaimed Nordsternpark — on the site of the former Nordstern colliery. With around 7,000 seats, it offers the ideal format for a festival that combines big stadium sound with festival intimacy. The stage opens onto the lawn, and the tiered seating ensures a clear view for every visitor — a rarity among open-air festivals of this scale.
The Pentecost weekend is an established pilgrimage destination in the German metal calendar: while other major festivals (Wacken, Summer Breeze) take place in the summer, the Rock Hard Festival marks the season opener for open-air lovers. The Ruhr area — birthplace of numerous German metal bands from Sodom and Kreator to Caliban — provides the fitting backdrop.
The campsite in the immediate festival vicinity is included in the ticket package. Food is predominantly regional (currywurst, fries, vegan options), and drinks are organized in a typical festival manner. Gelsenkirchen, an independent city with around 260,000 inhabitants and one of the largest cities in North Rhine-Westphalia, is easily accessible via the A2 motorway and its ICE train station.
Three days, one stage, around 30 bands — that's the compact formula of the Rock Hard Festival. The organizer (Rock Hard Magazine) curates a lineup considered hand-picked within the German-speaking metal scene: no nu-metal side dishes, no pop-metal compromise, but a consistent programming within the traditional, melodic, and progressive Heavy Metal spectrum.
Confirmed bands across all three days:
