Advent at Kaufbeuren's Landmark
The Medieval Christmas Market at the Fünfknopfturm is one of the most atmospheric Advent markets in the Allgäu region. The venue is the 33-meter-high Fünfknopfturm, built around 1420 – the landmark of the independent city of Kaufbeuren (state of Bavaria, administrative region of Swabia) – along with the historic city wall high above the old town.
Medieval by Torch and Candlelight
Instead of garish lights, the market relies on torches, candles, and flickering fire. Between artfully decorated stalls, there is a dense supporting program:
- City wall tours along the medieval fortifications
- medieval market music, alphorn players, theatre, and acrobatics
- a fairy tale tent with stories and games for children
- an evening fire show, opened by the night watchman
Craftsmanship, Culinary Delights, and a Good Cause
The stalls offer metalwork, textiles, pottery, jewellery, and sweets. Culinary delights include regional specialities like Reiberdatschi (potato pancakes), sausages, and schnitzel variations, as well as mulled wine, punch, mead, and herbal liqueurs. The special feature: the entire proceeds go to the Fazenda da Esperança Bickenried and the Kaufbeuren city's Christmas aid for needy children – a market that combines atmosphere with social commitment.
