Two-day city festival with 30 live acts on 6 stages
In recent years, the Altstadtsommer Kaufbeuren has become one of the best-known city festivals in the Allgäu region. For two days, 30 live acts on 6 stages transform Kaufbeuren's old town into an open festival stage. Unlike traditional city festivals, the Altstadtsommer focuses on a clear musical concept: Friday and Saturday each have their own genre profile.
The » IndiePopFriday « on Friday evening brings indie and pop bands from southern Germany to the stages – emerging artists as well as more established names from the Allgäu and Bavarian music scene. The » BrassSaturday « on Saturday focuses on brass music in its many forms: traditional Bavarian brass music, modern brass bands in the style of Marching Brass, and experimental fusion projects between brass and pop. This genre specialization gives the festival a distinctive character.
The venues are spread across the historic old town of Kaufbeuren: Kaiser-Max-Straße (main stage and Loop Stage), Ludwigstraße (the sixth stage, newly added in 2026), Obstmarkt, Schmiedgasse, Kirchplatz, and Spitalhof. The main stage is located at the historic town hall, which also serves as a DJ booth. The narrow medieval buildings with their half-timbered facades and city gates provide a unique backdrop.
The independent city of Kaufbeuren is located in the Allgäu region of Bavaria, about 80 km west of Munich. With around 45,000 inhabitants, Kaufbeuren forms an important center for the Swabian Allgäu. The medieval old town, with its Fünfknopfturm (Five-Button Tower), town hall, and city walls, has been preserved for centuries and is considered one of the most beautiful old towns in southern Bavaria. The Altstadtsommer utilizes this special ambiance to celebrate urban life in the narrow alleys.
In addition to music, the Altstadtsommer features an extensive street food market that opens at 5 PM, offering specialties from around the world: burgers, pizza, Asian cuisine, vegan options, crêpes, and Allgäu delicacies. A children's program on Kirchplatz on Saturday from 12 PM to 6 PM is aimed at families with games, interactive stations, and early musical education. In 2026, a public viewing of the World Cup match Germany – Ivory Coast will also be held – the festival coincides with the first games of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 2026 edition of the Altstadtsommer expands the festival with a sixth stage in Ludwigstraße. This brings the total to 30 live acts spread across six venues in Kaufbeuren's historic old town – a dense program that also makes strolling between stages appealing.
Friday's opening is dedicated to » IndiePopFriday «: indie and pop acts from southern Germany kick off the festival starting at 6 PM. Saturday, under the motto » BrassSaturday «, brings modern brass music to the stages – from traditional to experimental. The World Cup match Germany – Ivory Coast will be broadcast simultaneously as a public viewing.
