Neighborhood Festival in the Shadow of the City

Groß Borstel is one of the quietest neighborhoods in the Hamburg-Nord district – a mosaic of old single-family homes, a horse breeding facility (though the Hamburg-Bahrenfeld racecourse is elsewhere; Groß Borstel has its own green identity), schools, and a population aware of its neighborhood identity. The neighborhood festival is representative of this: a small, intimate festival that focuses on encounters rather than mass appeal.

Schrödersweg and Frustbergstraße

The festival area spans Schrödersweg and Frustbergstraße – two quiet residential streets that will be car-free for the day. Stages, flea market stalls, food stands, and children's activities will share the space. The concept is deliberately manageable: a festival ground at eye level with the residents, not a large-scale event setting.

Program: Food, Drinks, Flea Market, Children

The program follows a simple but effective format:

• Food Stalls – Bratwurst, cake from the association, crêpes, coffee and cake
• Flea Market Stalls – Residents sell private items: clothing, toys, books, furniture
• Children's Entertainment – Bouncy castle, face painting, craft activities, carousel
• Live Program – Local school bands, dance groups from youth clubs, occasional live music

Organizers

"Lebendiges Groß Borstel" is a neighborhood initiative that coordinates cultural and community activities in the area. The neighborhood office (located on Stadtteilstraße) provides advisory support and organizes the neighborhood festival together with local associations and schools.

Neighborhood Character

Groß Borstel has around 6,000 inhabitants, making it one of Hamburg's smaller neighborhoods – similar in size to Wellingsbüttel or Marmstorf. Within the Hamburg-Nord district, on the edge of the Außenalster lake and the airport flight path, Groß Borstel positions itself as a quiet residential community with a green profile. The neighborhood festival is the annual self-representation of this identity.
