Traditional fair since 1828 in the Mansfeld-Südharz district
Allstedt is located on the southern edge of Saxony-Anhalt, in the Mansfeld-Südharz district, between Sangerhausen and Querfurt. The town with just under 7,500 inhabitants has an impressively long history: Thomas Müntzer, the radical reformer, resided here, and in 1524, he delivered his infamous sermon to Duke Johann of Saxony. Today, Allstedt Castle attracts history enthusiasts. And in the summer, the Lindenmarkt arrives.
The market dates back to the early 19th century — in 1828, the first supra-regional fair rights for Allstedt are documented. This has developed over almost two centuries into a fixed date, occupying the first Thursday in July and the following weekend. In 2026, the town counts the 199th edition — the prelude to the grand 200th anniversary edition in 2027.
The venue is the Allstedt fairground, a small meadow on the outskirts of town that transforms into a bustling fair for the four festival days. Showmen from Central Germany arrive with carousels, shooting galleries, dodgems, and a Ferris wheel, along with market vendors selling sweets, leather goods, household items, and food. This is a classic fair in the best sense — not staged, not polished for tourists, but practiced routine between a family outing and a folk festival (Volksfest).
The market opens on Thursday afternoon from 4 PM, with live music on a small stage in the evening. On Friday and Saturday, the rides operate until late at night, and the stage features cover bands and DJ sets. Sunday is traditionally dedicated to families — a children's program at the carousel, with reduced ride prices.
Visitors to Lindenmarkt can easily combine their day with a visit to Allstedt Castle, where a Müntzer exhibition informs about the radical Reformation. Sangerhausen, with its Rosarium, is half an hour away by car, and the Luther town of Eisleben can be reached in 30 minutes.
The town of Allstedt organizes the Lindenmarkt in close cooperation with the Central German Showmen's Association. Rides and market stalls are set up from Wednesday onwards, with the traditional opening on Friday afternoon.
