Festival in underground cellars and vaults of Trier's city center with theatre, readings, concerts, and culinary delights
Thanks to its two-thousand-year history, Trier possesses an extraordinary heritage of underground spaces: Roman cellars and storage rooms, medieval wine cellars, early modern brewery vaults, and 19th-century industrial storage facilities. Many of these spaces are closed off in everyday life and only accessible to insiders. The Trier Underground Festival opens them to the general public for several weeks, combining the presentation of this hidden heritage with cultural formats.
The program includes classic guided tours with architectural historians and city guides, theatrical productions, concerts in acoustically outstanding vaults, literary readings, gastronomic events such as wine tastings and cellar dinners, and children's tours with age-appropriate storytelling formats. The lighting is specifically staged to enhance the spatial atmosphere.
The highlight of each festival year is the Long Night of the Underworlds. On a Saturday evening in mid-November, numerous cellars are opened simultaneously, and a joint admission ticket allows movement between locations. Concerts, performances, and gastronomic stations complement the experience. Advance ticket sales for the festival begin at the end of August each year, and for the Long Night at the beginning of October.
The 2026 edition coincides with the 40th anniversary of Trier's UNESCO World Heritage status. Additional guided tours related to World Heritage and thematic special events are expected, linking underground Roman structures with the above-ground World Heritage ensemble. The exact program will be published by the organizer at the end of August 2026 when advance sales begin.
