"Fez" — Masematte Means Fun
Anyone who grew up in Münster knows the word: "Fez" comes from Masematte, the local special language passed down through generations in the Hammer Quarter and Pott Quarter. "Fez machen" — that meant and still means: having fun. And that's precisely why the redesigned Hammer Street Festival is now called Hammer Fez: a commitment to Hammer's identity, a clear statement after the painful cancellation in 2025.
Why the Cancellation — and Why the Comeback Now
The old Hammer Street Festival was one of Westphalia's oldest street festivals — grown over decades, a fixture in Münster's summer. In 2025, it had to be cancelled: rising security and regulatory costs had pushed the volunteer-run format to its limits. The Aktions- und Werbegemeinschaft Hammer Straße e.V. (Action and Advertising Association Hammer Straße), the festival's organizer, used the forced break for a new concept: leaner, more local, clearer in profile. The result is Hammer Fez.
When and Where
The festival runs on Saturday, August 1, 2026, and Sunday, August 2, 2026, on Hammer Straße between house numbers 1 and 110 — over a full kilometer. Stalls on both sides of the street, stages at two key points, a continuous festival area in Münster's Hammer Quarter.
Two Stages — Two Focuses
- Joseph-Platz (at St. Joseph Catholic Church): Antenne Münster curates the stage program here — bands, live broadcasts, tombolas with vouchers from local retailers.
- Ludgerikreisel: The dance school SALSOMANIA takes over this stage, offering a Latin American program — Salsa, Bachata, choreography to join in.
What Else is Happening
Over 100 stalls are spread along the street: cafés, restaurants, retailers, craftspeople, culinary stations with street food ranging from Westphalian cuisine to Vietnamese spring rolls. Street performers mingle with the crowd — jugglers, acrobats, walking acts. For children: carousels, bouncy castles, trampoline parks.
Hammer Straße — The Heart of Münster South
Hammer Straße is the lifeline of the Hammer Quarter, a district of Münster with a special character: bourgeois-Catholic influence, yet also student-oriented, with a dense mix of retail, gastronomy, and residential population. This is also the traditional home of Masematte — where language and identity are still cultivated today. Anyone who wants to truly get to know Münster must visit the Hammer Quarter. And in the summer of 2026, you can't miss Hammer Fez.
