Cherries, bricks, and the Cherry Queen — the village festival of the Werder fruit-growing region
The Glindow Cherry and Brick Festival is one of the most original local festivals in Brandenburg because it brings two very different traditions under one roof: cherries and bricks — both are found on Glindow's coat of arms. The fruit fields and orchards around Glindow are part of the famous Werder fruit-growing region, which shapes Brandenburg's cherry and fruit cultivation. The Glindow brickworks, in turn, produced the red bricks for centuries that were used to build Berlin and Potsdam.
The festival was initiated in 1997 by the then local mayor Hermann Bobka, who invited all Glindow clubs, schools, and businesses to organize a local festival together. Since then, they have managed the festival collectively — sports clubs, the fire department, the church community, schools, kindergartens, and local businesses. This collective sponsorship is part of its identity: at the Cherry and Brick Festival, you see the whole village in action.
An institution of the festival is the Glindow Cherry Queen. She is crowned annually and represents Glindow at regional events for one year. The reigning queen, Heike Runge (2025/26), will be seen at the Green Week in Berlin in January, at the King's Day in Staßfurt (June 19–21), and of course at the Cherry and Brick Festival itself in 2026. A new queen is expected to be crowned at the 2026 festival.
Glindow is a district of the town of Werder (Havel) in the Potsdam-Mittelmark district — located directly on Glindow Lake, nestled in the fruit-growing landscape of the Havel lakes. The town of Werder (Havel) is part of the famous Werder fruit-growing region, which attracts millions of visitors annually with the Blossom Festival — the Cherry and Brick Festival is, so to speak, the family-friendly counterpart to the big Blossom Festival.
The 29th Cherry and Brick Festival 2026 in Glindow (district of Werder/Havel) will be held on July 4th and 5th on the traditional festival grounds at Jahnufer. The collective sponsorship by all Glindow clubs, schools, and businesses creates a special atmosphere: the festival belongs to everyone.
The focus is on the Cherry Queen as a symbol of the Werder fruit-growing region. The reigning queen, Heike Runge, will likely hand over her title to a new queen. The dual heritage — cherries and bricks — also remains a central theme: tastings, sales stands, and small exhibitions recall the Glindow brickworks tradition and the fruit-growing region around Glindow Lake.
Detailed program will be published in early summer 2026 at glindow.de/kirsch-und-ziegelfest.
