Local and folk festival at the historic post mill
Werder (Havel) is located in the Potsdam-Mittelmark district, southwest of Potsdam, in the middle of the lake-rich Havelland region. The town, with around 26,000 inhabitants, is world-famous for its Blossom Festival, which attracts hundreds of thousands every spring. But Werder has more to offer: the Havel island with its historic old town, the post mill, its fruit-growing heritage, and an active community landscape. The Mühlenfest is one of the annual highlights in the town's calendar.
The venue is the historic Werder (Havel) post mill at Mühlenberg 15. Post mills are the oldest type of Dutch windmills — mounted on a pivot, constructed entirely of wood. The Werder mill is one of the last of its kind in the region and is maintained by the Werderaner Mühlenverein (Werder Mill Association). The Mühlenfest brings this technical monument to life every year — and the surrounding festival grounds become a meeting point for families from the region.
The 33rd edition of the Mühlenfest will take place in 2026. Over two days on the weekend of August 8th and 9th, association activities, stage performances, and catering will shape the event. Associations from Werder offer activities for all age groups — tin can alley, craft stalls, sports activities, games. The stage program features music and show acts. Catering is provided by local restaurateurs and associations; admission is free.
Those visiting Werder for the first time should combine the day with a walk through the historic old town on the Havel island — St. Marien Church, Werder's shipping history, the old burgher houses. Werder is reachable from Berlin in 40 minutes via the RE1 train. The Mühlenfest is perfect for a family day trip — down-to-earth, convivial, and with genuine Brandenburg local flair. Restaurants, cafés, and ice cream parlors in the old town invite you to linger, and the numerous fruit plantations around Werder offer seasonal fruit-picking opportunities.
