Summer date of the rolling wine tasting in a historic steam train on August 22
The summer date of the rolling wine tasting with the Kuckucksbähnel on Saturday, August 22, 2026, is one of the last opportunities of the season to experience a Palatinate wine tasting in a historic steam train. The event complements the three consecutive July trips (July 10–12) and offers a separate summer experience date in the warm month of August.
The concept is identical to the July series: a historic steam locomotive — affectionately known as the "Kuckucksbähnel" — pulls approximately 100-year-old wooden carriages through the picturesque Elmsteiner Tal in the Pfälzerwald. During the journey, four Palatinate vintners serve their wines in the carriages, an intimate, romantic tasting with the clatter of the historic railway as a soundscape.
The route leads from Neustadt Central Station, platform 5, through the narrow Pfälzerwald valleys up to Elmstein — a small, charming Pfälzerwald village at the end of the historic Lambrecht Railway. The route is particularly scenic, with numerous bridges, tunnels, and views of the Pfälzerwald.
In Elmstein, a Palatinate culinary break with regional specialties awaits — a perfect accompaniment to the ongoing wine tasting. Before the return journey, there is time for a short walk or a visit to the historic station ensemble.
The price of €85 per person includes: wine tasting on board, food in Elmstein, an exclusive tasting glass as a souvenir, and reserved seating for the outward and return journeys. Tickets are strictly limited and must be booked well in advance through the Neustadt Railway Museum — the summer dates are often particularly popular and sell out quickly, as August is an especially attractive travel month.
The date on August 22 is also practical because it can be easily combined with other Palatinate summer events — such as the Diedesfeld Wine Festival (Weinkerwe), which runs concurrently, or a weekend visit to the Palatinate region.
The 2026 summer date continues the proven concept of the Kuckucksbähnel wine tasting — a steam train journey with a rolling wine tasting. The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in spring/summer. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years and the parallel July trips:
The event is part of the rich Palatinate festival culture, which attracts thousands of guests to the Neustadt an der Weinstraße region every year. The combination of wine culture, Palatinate hospitality, and established festival traditions forms the unmistakable identity of this Palatinate festival institution.
