Christmas market with street artists, jugglers, and clowning in the Wilmersdorfer pedestrian zone
The street theatre festival „Berlin lacht!" is a fixture of Berlin's summer culture — with large summer editions around Washingtonplatz at the main station and at Potsdamer Platz. In winter, the team transfers its concept to the Advent season under the label Kultur-Weihnachtsmarkt (Cultural Christmas Market): Instead of Brandenburg Gate and the main station, the Wilmersdorfer Straße pedestrian zone in the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf borough takes on the role of the festival stage.
What distinguishes the Berlin lacht market from classic Berlin Christmas markets are the street artists: jugglers, clowns, acrobats, fairy-tale characters, fabulous creatures, and musicians perform between the stalls all day long. Walk-acts, mini-performances, and small stage shows complement the classic market offerings — making the market a mix of arts and crafts market, Christmas mile, and open-air stage.
The Wilmersdorfer Straße is one of Berlin's oldest shopping streets and has been car-free as a pedestrian zone since the 1970s. It runs between Bismarckstraße (U7) and Adenauerplatz, with connections to U2 and U7 (Bismarckstraße) as well as U7 (Wilmersdorfer Straße). During the Christmas season, the Berlin lacht stalls are spread over several hundred meters of the pedestrian zone — the combination of a shopping street and a Christmas market distinguishes it from markets concentrated in a square, like Gendarmenmarkt or Charlottenburg Palace.
The stall assortment combines classic Advent offerings with curated arts and crafts:
With three major Christmas markets in the district — Wilmersdorfer Straße (Berlin lacht), Charlottenburg Palace, and Weihnachtszauber (Christmas magic) around Gedächtniskirche / Breitscheidplatz — the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf borough is one of Berlin's most densely packed Advent districts. Berlin lacht is the format with the strongest street theatre character.
As in previous years, the Berlin lacht! team will be animating the Wilmersdorfer Straße during the Advent season. Focus for 2026: street art, curated arts and crafts, hot drink stalls, and walk-acts.
