Bavaria's southeasternmost folk festival marks the end of the season
The Passau Dult – both the May Dult and the Autumn Dult – historically dates back to a medieval market documented in the Three Rivers City as early as the 13th century. Today, it is one of the largest folk festivals in Lower Bavaria and a central event for the city and district of Passau.
Unlike most Bavarian folk festivals, the Passau Dult is not characterized by a classic beer tent, but by the DultStadl – a permanently installed hall with around 7,500 seats, designed in the style of a Bavarian inn. Traditional costume and party bands play here daily, Lower Bavarian traditional costume groups dance here, and the innkeeping team serves festival beer by the liter.
While the May Dult opens the Lower Bavarian festival season at the end of April / beginning of May, the Autumn Dult closes it at the beginning of September. It is the last major opportunity to experience a Bavarian folk festival before the Munich Oktoberfest – with the charm of a city of 53,000 inhabitants, where you often know the innkeepers and traditional costume groups personally.
Traditional highlights of the Autumn Dult are the Costume and Marksmen Parade with brass bands on the first weekend and the Dult Fireworks on Dult Wednesday (mid-point). Children's Day with half-price rides and a family program in the DultStadl completes the schedule.
A special feature of Passau: Those arriving from the Upper Austrian Inn or Danube valleys can reach the Dult by ship. The piers are a few minutes' walk from the public transport connection to Messepark Kohlbruck.
In 2026, the Autumn Dult runs for ten days from Friday, September 4, to Sunday, September 13. Opening at Messepark Kohlbruck on Friday afternoon. On the festival days, traditional costume and party bands play daily in the DultStadl; in addition, amusement rides, market stalls, and food stands populate the grounds.
Children's Day on Monday, September 8, has long been a must for Passau families: half-price rides, Punch and Judy shows, mascot parades, and family offers in the DultStadl from 2 PM to 5 PM. On Dult Wednesday, September 9, the sky over Kohlbruck will light up with the traditional grand fireworks display.
By bus: Special city bus lines to Messepark Kohlbruck during the Dult. By train: Passau Main Station, then bus. Parking available at the exhibition grounds.
Admission to the festival grounds is free. Table reservations in the DultStadl directly with the innkeeper – not through the city.
Children's Day on Monday, September 8, 2026, from 2 PM to 5 PM with a program in the DultStadl.
