Lower Bavaria's Spring Volksfest at Messepark Kohlbruck
Passau, the city of three rivers in southeastern Bavaria, hosts two major folk festivals annually: the Maidult in spring and the Herbstdult in late summer. Both take place at Messepark Kohlbruck on the southern outskirts and are integral to the identity of this major Lower Bavarian city. The Maidult is also the largest spring folk festival in Lower Bavaria and kicks off the Eastern Bavarian folk festival season.
With nearly 7,500 seats, the Dultstadl is one of the largest festival tents in Bavaria outside of Munich's Oktoberfest. It hosts live music daily (brass bands, party bands), serves beer from Lower Bavarian breweries, and offers traditional Bavarian cuisine. In addition, other smaller tents and a large amusement park with classic rides (Ferris wheel, roller coaster, bumper cars) and new attractions for the season ensure the complete folk festival atmosphere.
Passau, an independent city with around 53,000 inhabitants at the confluence of the Danube, Inn, and Ilz rivers, is a university city and a bishop's seat. The Maidult is one of the important identity-forming events for the city and the surrounding Passau district, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors each year from all over Eastern Bavaria, neighboring Upper Austria, and the South Bohemian region.
The 2026 edition of the Passauer Maidult starts on Thursday, April 30th, at Messepark Kohlbruck and runs until Sunday, May 10th. The organizer is the City of Passau. The Dultstadl, with nearly 7,500 seats, features live music daily, while the surrounding amusement rides and market mile offer a complete folk festival experience, from classic carousels to the season's latest attractions.
Particularly noteworthy are the traditional costume and marksmen's parade on May 3rd (with brass music through Passau's city center), the Children's Day on May 4th (with reduced prices and circus performances), the Business Day on May 6th, the themed ABBA Night on May 7th, and the musical and pyrotechnic Grand Firework Display on May 8th at 10:00 PM.
Admission to the festival grounds is free. Reservations in the Dultstadl are recommended; details on ride prices available at the stands. Family Day on May 4th offers reduced prices on rides.
By car via the A 3 (Regensburg – Passau – Linz), exit Passau-Süd, follow signs for Messepark Kohlbruck. By train to Passau Hauptbahnhof; special shuttle buses to Messepark during the Dult.
Admission to the festival grounds is free. Table and bench seat reservations in the Dultstadl are recommended – especially for weekends and theme nights.
Opening day Thursday from 3:00 PM. Weekdays usually from 11:30 AM, weekends from 10:00 AM. Closing between 10:00 PM and midnight depending on the day.
