About Sonntags am Piesberg

From May to September 2026, Sonntags am Piesberg transforms the industrial culture area at Osnabrück's Piesberg into a family experience on the first Sunday of each month. The MIK Museum of Industrial Culture and the Piesberger Gesellschaftshaus offer narrow-gauge railway rides, steam locomotive demonstrations, guided tours, and craft demonstrations. Embedded in the UNESCO Nature and Geopark TERRA.vita, the series showcases industrial history and geological features at an authentic location: the former coal mine. A relaxed combination of education, recreation, and history for the whole family.

Industrial Culture to Experience

The Piesberg north of Osnabrück is an industrial and geological heavyweight: a former coal mine, now a local recreation area in the UNESCO Nature and Geopark TERRA.vita. The Sonntags am Piesberg series makes this special place accessible on five Sundays from May to September 2026 — on the first Sunday of each month.

MIK Museum of Industrial Culture

The MIK Museum of Industrial Culture Osnabrück documents the history of coal mining at Piesberg. Tools, machines, photographs, and documents from two centuries are exhibited. On the Sunday dates, volunteer guides lead tours through the museum and into the underground areas.

Piesberger Gesellschaftshaus

The neighboring Piesberger Gesellschaftshaus is a historic event building that now serves as an educational and cultural center. Exhibitions, workshops, and lectures complement the Sunday program.

Highlights for Families

  • Piesberg Narrow-Gauge Railway — historic narrow-gauge railway with rides across the site
  • Steam Locomotive Demonstrations on selected Sundays
  • Site Tours through the former quarry
  • Craft Demonstrations — blacksmiths, carpenters, historic trades
  • Children's Program with hands-on activities
  • Gastronomy at the Gesellschaftshaus

UNESCO Geopark as Context

The UNESCO Nature and Geopark TERRA.vita extends across the Osnabrück region, Tecklenburg Land, and the Wiehengebirge hills. The Piesberg is one of its geological highlights — a 300-million-year-old Carboniferous formation with globally significant fossil finds.
