Family program on the first Sunday of the month from May to September in the UNESCO Geopark TERRA.vita
The Piesberg north of Osnabrück is an industrial and geological heavyweight: a former coal mine, now a local recreation area in the UNESCO Nature and Geopark TERRA.vita. The Sonntags am Piesberg series makes this special place accessible on five Sundays from May to September 2026 — on the first Sunday of each month.
The MIK Museum of Industrial Culture Osnabrück documents the history of coal mining at Piesberg. Tools, machines, photographs, and documents from two centuries are exhibited. On the Sunday dates, volunteer guides lead tours through the museum and into the underground areas.
The neighboring Piesberger Gesellschaftshaus is a historic event building that now serves as an educational and cultural center. Exhibitions, workshops, and lectures complement the Sunday program.
The UNESCO Nature and Geopark TERRA.vita extends across the Osnabrück region, Tecklenburg Land, and the Wiehengebirge hills. The Piesberg is one of its geological highlights — a 300-million-year-old Carboniferous formation with globally significant fossil finds.
Every first Sunday from May to September: May 3, June 7, July 5, August 2, and September 6, 2026. Program and opening hours vary slightly depending on the date — current information at museum-industriekultur-osnabrueck.de and erleben.osnabrueck.de.
The 2026 season includes five dates from May to September. Each Sunday features its own program highlights and changing demonstrations.
