Traditional spring fun run on the Maaraue peninsula at the mouth of the Main
Since 1995, the Turnverein Kostheim 1877 e.V. has organized the Maarauelauf, one of the most distinguished spring runs in the Mainz region. With the 32nd edition in 2026, the run continues its unbroken tradition and confirms its reputation as a family-friendly, well-organized fun run with an exceptionally scenic course. The Maaraue, located between Mainz-Kostheim, the Rhine, and the mouth of the Main, is a green peninsula with wide floodplains, old trees, and extensive meadows — an ideal setting for a fun run that combines sport and experiencing nature.
The DLV approval ensures that the courses are accurately measured, making the running results usable for rankings. The main course of 11.1 kilometers (two laps of the large Maaraue loop) is appreciated by ambitious hobby runners and competitive athletes alike — many Mainz runners use the Maarauelauf as a warm-up competition for the Gutenberg Half Marathon, which takes place just under four weeks later. Additionally, there are shorter courses (5.5 km, 2.2 km) as well as school and Bambini courses of 1,000 meters and 400 meters, so the whole family can be active on race day.
The start and finish are at the sports field of TV Kostheim 1877 e.V. on the edge of the Maaraue. On race day, the club sets up a comprehensive catering and reception area here: registration, bib collection, changing rooms, showers, refreshments on the course and at the finish, award ceremonies, food stalls, and coffee service. The family atmosphere — many helpers come from the club and the district, many runners have known each other for years — is one of the hallmarks of the Maarauelauf.
In early April, the date is ideally placed in the Rhenish-Hessian spring: usually mild weather, blooming trees along the course, good conditions for personal best times. Those running the Maarauelauf for the first time will experience a perfectly organized fun run with a pleasant course layout and an atmosphere that combines the best of Rhenish-Hessian club culture and sporting tradition.
The schedule for the 32nd Maarauelauf follows the proven structure of previous years. Bib collection opens at 8:00 AM in the clubhouse, changing rooms and showers are available from 8:30 AM. The first starts for school and youth races are from 9:30 AM, the main race of 11.1 kilometers starts at 10:00 AM. The shorter courses (5.5 km, 2.2 km) run concurrently. Bambini and family runs round off the morning. Award ceremonies, snacks, coffee, and club catering in the clubhouse from 12:00 PM.
