Practical information — Gärtnerplatz Open Air

Gärtnerplatz is centrally located in the Glockenbachviertel. The U-Bahn stations Fraunhoferstraße (U1/U2) or Isartor (S-Bahn main line) are within walking distance. Travel by public transport is recommended, as parking is scarce in the neighbourhood.

Admission

Admission to the Gärtnerplatz Open Air is free.

On Site

A street food market serves visitors on Saturdays from 3 p.m. to midnight and on Sundays from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., along with Augustiner beer.

Music from the Theatre onto the Square

The Gärtnerplatz Open Air was launched in 2006. The idea came from the late chief conductor David Stahl, who wanted to bring the music out of the theatre and onto the square. Since then, the festival has become a firm cultural fixture in the Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt district.

Two Days, Two Worlds

The festival thrives on its contrast: Saturday is dedicated to jazz and pop, while Sunday belongs to the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz. The theatre's ensemble, choir, and orchestra perform excerpts from operas, operettas, and musicals. Sunday is traditionally hosted by the theatre's Intendant.

Folk Festival Atmosphere in the Glockenbachviertel

Around the stage, a street food market with culinary offerings and Augustiner beer creates a festive atmosphere. Gärtnerplatz, with its green roundabout, becomes a summer stage in the heart of the city – an open cultural festival for everyone.

Free Cultural Enjoyment

With around 45,000 visitors per year, the Gärtnerplatz Open Air is considered Munich's largest classical open-air event. Admission is free, and the festival is supported by, among others, the Edith-Haberland-Wagner-Stiftung and the district of Upper Bavaria.
