Munich's largest classical open-air event on Gärtnerplatz in the Glockenbachviertel
The Gärtnerplatz Open Air was launched in 2006. The idea came from the late chief conductor David Stahl, who wanted to bring the music out of the theatre and onto the square. Since then, the festival has become a firm cultural fixture in the Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt district.
The festival thrives on its contrast: Saturday is dedicated to jazz and pop, while Sunday belongs to the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz. The theatre's ensemble, choir, and orchestra perform excerpts from operas, operettas, and musicals. Sunday is traditionally hosted by the theatre's Intendant.
Around the stage, a street food market with culinary offerings and Augustiner beer creates a festive atmosphere. Gärtnerplatz, with its green roundabout, becomes a summer stage in the heart of the city – an open cultural festival for everyone.
With around 45,000 visitors per year, the Gärtnerplatz Open Air is considered Munich's largest classical open-air event. Admission is free, and the festival is supported by, among others, the Edith-Haberland-Wagner-Stiftung and the district of Upper Bavaria.
On July 11 and 12, 2026, Gärtnerplatz will once again transform into a summer open-air stage. Saturday is dedicated to jazz and pop, while Sunday belongs to the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz, which presents excerpts from operas, operettas, and musicals with its choir, orchestra, and ensemble. Sunday will be hosted by the Intendant.
Around the stage, a street food market will cater to guests – Saturdays from 3 p.m. to midnight, Sundays from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. Admission is free.
The detailed artist and program information will be published in advance on the official festival website.
