One of Munich's Three Dulten
The Auer Dult is one of Munich's most traditional events, held three times a year on Mariahilfplatz in the Au-Haidhausen district. The Jakobidult is the second of the three editions and runs from July 25 to August 2, 2026. The other two Dulten are the Maidult (April 25 – May 3, 2026) and the Kirchweihdult (October 17 – 25, 2026).
Around 250 Stalls on Mariahilfplatz
The Dult is a classic market with around 250 stalls. The range includes:
- Porcelain, ceramics, and pottery – the Dult is famous for its pottery market
- Antiques and bric-a-brac
- Basketware and household goods
- Toys and children's items
- Traditional Bavarian attire accessories and Bavarian specialties
- Spices and drugstore items
Historic Rides and Family Day
The market is complemented by historic rides: the 1925 Ferris wheel as the Dult's visual landmark, dodgems, chain flyers, and children's carousels. Tuesdays are traditionally Family Days with reduced prices on amusement rides – a magnet for Munich families.
Culinary Offerings
Bavarian delicacies are as much a part of the Auer Dult as the Ferris wheel: Schupfnudeln (potato noodles) from the large pan, grilled fish, Steckerlfisch (fish on a stick), pretzels, gingerbread hearts, cotton candy, and cream horns. Vegetarian and vegan options are also part of the offering today. Drinking water fountains on the festival grounds are freely accessible.
History of the Auer Dult
The Auer Dult dates back to the Jakobimarkt (St. James' Market), which was held around St. James' Day (July 25) since the Middle Ages – hence the name Jakobidult. The market was first documented in 1310. Today, the Dult is one of Southern Germany's largest markets and, as part of Munich's urban culture, shapes the image of the Au-Haidhausen district.
Mariahilfplatz – Landmark of the Au
Mariahilfplatz, with the neo-Gothic Mariahilfkirche (Church of Our Lady of Help, 1839), is the heart of the Au district. During the Dult, stalls and rides dominate the square; otherwise, it is one of the most beautiful squares south of the Isar River. Au-Haidhausen, a central Munich district, is one of the city's most vibrant neighborhoods – its Dult is one of the few truly bourgeois large-scale events in Munich.
