One of the oldest annual markets in Hesse – since the 15th century
The Grünberger Gallusmarkt is one of the oldest annual markets in Hesse. Its roots reach back to the 15th century – specifically to Gallustag (October 16th), the feast day of Saint Gallus, which traditionally marked the occasion for market days in the pre-industrial era. In 2026, the 546th edition will be celebrated, from October 10th to 18th – nine days of market, folk, and club festival.
The venue is the festival grounds at the Gallushalle and on the access road in 35305 Grünberg. The Gallushalle itself is the town's central event hall – the festival activities unfold around it. Rides, carousels, shooting galleries, food stalls, and market stalls selling household goods and wares form the classic mix of an annual market.
The Gallusmarkt, as a historical market type, has a specific tradition: In the late Middle Ages and early modern period, market days on Gallustag were an integral part of the economic calendar – they marked the transition to winter, when the harvest was brought in and supplies were sold. Grünberg, a small town of around 13,000 inhabitants in the Gießen district, has maintained and continuously developed this tradition for over five centuries – a remarkable consistency.
Grünberg is located in Upper Hesse, near the Vogelsberg district, in the Gießen district, in the southeastern foothills of the Vogelsberg mountains. The small town has a historic old town with half-timbered buildings, a university for police and administration, and a rural-bourgeois atmosphere. The Gallusmarkt is the most important date in the annual calendar and attracts visitors from the entire district and beyond.
The unusually long nine-day format distinguishes the Gallusmarkt from many other town festivals and Kirmes (fair). It allows for the full spectrum: two weekends, with weekdays in between offering quieter activities for families and seniors. Clubs from the town and surrounding area participate in the festival activities, traditional music and dance groups perform, and showmen from all over southern Germany set up their rides.
Classic nine-day format with two weekends. The organizer is the tourism office of the city of Grünberg. Detailed program (parade date, activities for clubs, special events) will be published on the city's website.
