Four days loud and quiet at the Diebsturm – free open-air summer festival in Grünberg
Sommer am Turm is Grünberg's summer festival at the foot of the historic Diebsturm – a medieval defensive tower that has become the unmistakable landmark of the small town in Hesse, located in the Vogelsberg district. From August 6th to 9th, 2026, the festival invites for four days to a colorful program in the city center – completely free of charge.
Because the Diebsturm is scheduled for renovation in 2026, the organizing team around the City of Grünberg and the Grünberg Economic Development and Community Development Company (GWG) has chosen a fitting motto: "Summer at the Construction Site". The organizers are staging the construction site backdrop as part of the festival – a wink that places the festival days under a unifying theme.
The festival is spread across several venues around the tower: the Main Stage at the Tower, the Fairy Tale Forest for young visitors, the Starry Sky with a lounge atmosphere, and the iconic Grünberg City Beach with real sand, deck chairs, and a cocktail bar. The latter becomes a postcard motif every summer – right in the heart of Central Hesse.
Sommer am Turm is funded by the Hessian program "ab in die Mitte! Die Innenstadtoffensive Hessen" (Into the Middle! The Inner City Offensive Hesse) of the Hessian Ministry of Economics, Energy, Transport, Housing, and Rural Development. Goal: to revitalize Hessian city centers and create meeting places. Sommer am Turm is considered one of the most successful examples of this program.
Blankets or a beach mat for the Grünberg City Beach, a good mood – and preferably the whole family: The festival is explicitly designed to be family-friendly, with numerous program items for children.
Grünberg is a small town with around 14,000 inhabitants in the Gießen district, located about 30 km northeast of Gießen. The historic old town with the distinctive Diebsturm and the important pilgrimage church of St. Antonius is among the most beautiful in Central Hesse. Sommer am Turm has become the city's identity-forming major event and is eagerly awaited each year like Oktoberfest in Munich – only less commercial, more local, and with significantly more beach.
Four festival days at the Diebsturm Grünberg: From the opening evening with the mayor and live band to the Sunday Jazz Brunch, the program is spread across the stage at the tower, the fairy tale forest, the starry sky, and the beach area. Free admission.
Free admission. Food and drinks available on-site at usual festival prices.
By car: A5 (Frankfurt–Kassel), exit Reiskirchen, then B49 towards Grünberg. By train: Grünberg station (RB line Gießen–Fulda), from there approx. 10 min. walk to the Diebsturm.

Thursday evening is the opening with the mayor, dialect comedy, and a live concert. If you want the full festival vibe: Come Friday or Saturday for the main concerts and stay for the Sunday Jazz Brunch.
