Opera singing masterclass with public final concerts in the Herrschaftsscheune
Schloss Laubach in the small residential town of Laubach in the Vogelsberg district has been the ancestral seat of the Solms-Laubach count family since the 13th century. The complex is characterized by three Baroque-crowned towers and extensive castle grounds, housing a museum and one of Europe's most significant private libraries. The opera singing masterclass Oper Schloss Laubach takes place annually in this historic setting.
The masterclass runs for approximately three weeks starting in August. Young professional singers from around the world work with renowned instructors on roles from the classical repertoire. Participants reside on the castle grounds during the course – an intensive atmosphere that shapes the essence of the festival.
The 2026 program juxtaposes three works from three stylistic eras: Le nozze di Figaro by Mozart (Viennese Classicism), Fidelio by Beethoven (Romanticism), and Otello by Verdi (Italian Late Romanticism). Selected scenes will be rehearsed and performed in the two public final concerts on September 3rd and 4th.
A programmatic innovation for 2026: For the first time, Oper Frankfurt is supporting the masterclass in dramaturgical, musical, and logistical matters. This cooperation brings the prestige of one of Germany's leading opera houses to the rural setting and strengthens the connection between young talent and established professionals.
The day after the public concerts, on September 5th, 2026, participants will compete in an internal singing competition, reserved for an invited circle of friends and patrons. The jury consists of directors from national and international opera houses – acting not only as judges but also as talent scouts for upcoming seasons.
The concerts take place in the Herrschaftsscheune – a historic farm building of the castle ensemble converted into a concert hall. Its acoustic quality and intimate concert atmosphere have made the space a valued venue for classical music in rural Hesse.
The 2026 edition marks a significant step for the festival with the new cooperation with Oper Frankfurt. The three-week masterclass begins in August at the castle; the dates listed here are the public highlights concluding the summer course.
