Traditional village festival of the Schwifting community on Assumption Day
In Upper Bavaria, Assumption Day – August 15th – is one of the major Catholic holidays and a public holiday in the predominantly Catholic communities of Bavaria. Schwifting in the district of Landsberg am Lech has been using this day for years for its traditional Dorffest (village festival), which is supported by the Schwifting village community.
The venue is the village square on Dorfstraße – the geographical and social center of the small community. With around 800 inhabitants, Schwifting is a typical Upper Bavarian rural community with a church, an inn, and a close-knit club life. At the Dorffest, the people of Schwifting and guests from the Lechrain meet for a festival that gets by without large stage productions – but that's precisely where its charm lies.
The Schwifting Dorffest typically follows a daytime program from 11 AM to 9 PM: lunch with brass music (often a local band from the Landsberg–Greifenberg region), coffee and homemade cake in the afternoon, and grilled specialties and cozy get-togethers in the evening. The local inn, Drexl-Hof, has supported the Dorffest in previous years – the combination of a farm and a village festival gives the event an authentic touch.
Schwifting is located between Landsberg am Lech (8 km) and the Ammersee lake (15 km), in a landscape of meadows, forests, and small farms. Visitors to the Dorffest can combine their day with a trip to Landsberg, a visit to the Wieskirche church, or a swim in the Ammersee. However, the festival itself is deliberately small – a village gathering with open doors, not a tourist magnet.
Unlike the large folk festivals in the region (Landsberger Ruethenfest, Augsburger Plärrer), the Schwifting Dorffest is an event that thrives on the volunteer efforts of the village community. Admission is free, the atmosphere is familiar, and every year neighbors, former residents of Schwifting, and friends of the Drexl-Hof gather – a place where the Catholic customs of Upper Bavaria are naturally lived out.
On Saturday, August 15th, 2026, the day of Assumption Day, the Schwifting village community invites you again to the traditional Dorffest at the village square in Dorfstraße 7. The festival starts at 11 AM and ends around 9 PM.
The day follows the proven schedule of previous years: lunch with brass music, coffee and cake in the afternoon, and grilled specialties in the evening. The Schwifting village community is the organizer – free admission, all guests from Schwifting and the Lechrain are warmly welcome.
The exact band lineup will be announced by the Schwifting village community before the event. No further program points are announced.
Schwifting is located about 8 km north of Landsberg am Lech, off the main roads. Drive via the B 17 (Augsburg–Landsberg) or the A 96 (Munich–Lindau, Greifenberg/Landsberg exit). By train to Landsberg am Lech, then by bus or taxi.
Free admission. Food and drinks are available for purchase. Table reservations are not possible – the festival thrives on its spontaneous character.
