Traditional Thanksgiving Festival in Groß Varlingen — Conclusion of the Anniversary Festival Chain for the Double 75th Anniversary
In many North German villages, the Erntedankfest (Thanksgiving festival) marks the end of the agricultural season and is a conscious act of gratitude for the harvest. Unlike the more social Erntefest (harvest festival), which focuses on celebration, the Erntedankfest combines religious elements (church service, blessing) with communal dining and social gathering. In Groß Varlingen, the Erntedankfest serves as the conclusion of the entire anniversary festival chain for the fire department and shooting club.
The central symbol of Thanksgiving is the Erntekrone (harvest crown) — an artfully woven creation of grain ears, flowers, and ribbons. In the weeks leading up to the festival, the women of the village community craft the crown, which is then presented and blessed during the festival. It symbolizes a successful harvest and gratitude to creation.
Starting at 3 PM at the "Unter den Eichen" festival grounds. Following an Erntedank church service with the blessing of the harvest crown, there will be a communal coffee hour in the festival tent with homemade cakes from the village community. Afterwards, a hearty dinner featuring North German specialties and a musical program with a dance evening.
The Erntedankfest is the fourth and final event in the 2026 anniversary festival chain: August 28 Festival Commemoration as the festive kickoff, August 30 Shooting Festival, October 3 Oktoberfest with Bubingas, and now October 4 Thanksgiving Festival. With this conclusion, village life in Groß Varlingen returns to its quiet autumn routine, and the clubs can look back on an extraordinary anniversary year.
The Erntedankfest is not just a festive occasion but also a commitment to rural tradition and village community. In times of increasing anonymity and industrialization of agriculture, small villages like Groß Varlingen keep these traditions alive and pass them on to the next generation.
The Groß Varlingen village community will publish the detailed 2026 program in advance via the Samtgemeinde Mittelweser and local announcements.
