One Day, Two Moods

"Tanz an den Mai" is Rostock's version of the widespread German custom of dancing the night of April 30th into May 1st. At the Stadthafen, the concept is implemented in an open-air format: The grounds open in the afternoon for a relaxed after-work phase with calmer sets, and from early evening, the DJ turns it up, transforming the area into an open-air club until deep into the May Day night.

Musical Direction

The sound program focuses on House, club sounds, and current charts. The organizers are the club collective UKW Rostock, which has converted a former power plant in Rostock into a techno location, and Freiland Festival, which curates open-air formats in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern during the summer. In parallel, other "Tanz in den Mai" events are running in the city — at LT-Club and Bunker Rostock — making the entire city center a dance floor.

Local Context

Rostock is located in the Rostock district in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and has been intensively using its historic Stadthafen for open-air events for years. The location directly on the Warnow, with views of historic warehouses and a maritime industrial backdrop, gives the dance night a distinctive harbor atmosphere that sets it apart from classic indoor club parties.
