Autumn wine festival in the castle cellar and gallery
The Löcknitz Castle, with roots tracing back to a Slavic palisade fort at the Randow crossing, has been home to the Heimat- und Burgverein since 2005. With its striking keep, it forms the cultural heart of the Löcknitz municipality in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district, in the far northeast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The wine festival is one of the pillars of the association's event calendar, fostering "culture within ancient walls.".
The 2025 anniversary festival was themed »Why look far afield – the best wines from Germany«: selected German wines from Mosel, Pfalz, Rheinhessen, and Baden for tasting and purchase, presented in a relaxed atmosphere. Federweißer with Zwiebelkuchen, small cheese platters, and bread selections accompanied the evening, traditionally marked by live music and communal singing.
The vaulted castle cellar, with its rough masonry and candlelight, creates a particularly intimate atmosphere. In contrast, the castle gallery, which often hosts small exhibitions by local artists, offers spaces for longer conversations at standing tables. Guests mingle freely between the two areas – a concept that makes the wine festival more than just a tasting event.
The festival is run entirely by volunteers. The income generated finances the ongoing renovation of the castle and its cultural offerings from May to November. Visitors to this remote corner of the Uecker-Randow region will find a warm, distinctly East German form of club culture that supports the entire village.
Löcknitz is located directly on the Polish border, about 30 kilometers southeast of Pasewalk and 60 kilometers south of Szczecin (Stettin). Löcknitz station is served by the Berlin–Szczecin line; Szczecin main station can be reached by train in about 35 minutes. By car, take the A11 (exit Penkun) or the B104.
