Traditional marksmen's festival with king's shooting, parade, and dance evening on Bogenstraße
Schützenfeste are an important part of village and town life in Northern Germany. Hessisch Oldendorf divides its marksmen's association into several companies, each celebrating its own festival on different weeks. The 1st Company traditionally opens the season in early summer with its Schützenfest, which has roots stretching back several centuries. The festival is more than a traditional event—it is the social heart of the company and a meeting place for generations.
The festival schedule follows a traditional structure typical for Schützenfeste in Lower Saxony. Thursday is usually the kick-off with assembly, opening ceremony, and the first festival evening. Friday is dedicated to the king's shooting, where the new marksmen's king is determined. Saturday features the grand parade through the town, followed by the King's Ball in the evening. Sunday concludes the festival cycle with Family Day and a morning pint (Frühschoppen).
Bogenstraße in Hessisch Oldendorf hosts the festival tent and the grounds where the shooting ranges, beer stands, the stage for live music, and small carousels and stalls are set up. Over the festival days, the grounds become the social center of the town: residents, club members, guests from neighboring towns, and visitors from the district meet here.
The highlight of the festival is the determination of the new marksmen's king through the traditional king's shooting. A wooden disc or a bird is shot at with a small-caliber rifle—whoever shoots off the last piece becomes king. The ceremonial proclamation and the subsequent king's dinner mark an emotional moment that shapes the entire course of the festival.
On Saturday, the company forms up in uniform, accompanied by music bands, for the parade through the town center. Residents decorate their houses, and spectators line the streets. Afterwards, the grand King's Ball takes place in the festival tent—dance music until late at night, with several bands or DJs providing the atmosphere. The live music features a mix of classics, Schlager, and cover versions.
Sunday is dedicated to families. A morning pint (Frühschoppen) with brass music, children's games, carousels, face painting, and an extended lunch for the company and its guests characterize the day. The festival concludes on Sunday evening, ending a traditional festival weekend.
The exact program will be published by the organizer in early summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years: opening evening, king's shooting, parade, king's ball, and family day.
