Heritage Open Day in Worms with free admission to Andreasstift, Heylshof and other heritage sites of the Nibelungen city
The Heritage Open Day has been held annually since 1993 on the second Sunday of September, initiated by the German Foundation for Monument Protection and part of the European Heritage Days. In over 6,000 communities in Germany, heritage sites, museums and initiatives open their doors. Worms, as one of the oldest cities in Germany with rich Roman, medieval, Jewish and industrial heritage, has been intensively involved from the beginning.
The 2026 national motto is NetzWERKE Heritage and Infrastructure. It draws attention to buildings and facilities that have enabled historical infrastructure: bridges, water towers, railway facilities, power supplies, paths and harbour facilities. In Worms, the motto offers the opportunity to put buildings such as the Nibelungenbrücke, the Worms Rhine harbour, historical water supply facilities and the former Worms industrial sites in the focus.
During the Heritage Day, admission to the Museum of the City of Worms at the Andreasstift is free. The former Augustinian collegiate church from the 12th century houses the central urban history collection focusing on Worms early history, Roman Worms, the Nibelungenlied and the city of the imperial diets. The Heylshof Museum — the former city residence of the Heyl family with art collection from the Renaissance to the 19th century — also opens free of charge.
The City of Worms and its partner associations offer a dense guided tour program: city tours through Jewish Worms with synagogue, mikvah and Heiliger Sand, Worms cathedral tours, tours of the Liebfrauenkirche, archaeological tours at the Worms Limes and in the city centre, ship tours on the Rhine and works tours in still preserved industrial monuments.
Worms is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site SchUM Cities Speyer Worms Mainz, the most important cradle of Jewish life in Central Europe. The Worms Heritage Day traditionally places a focus on Jewish heritage: synagogue, Rashi House, mikvah and Heiliger Sand are opened up with tours.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the City of Worms in late summer. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
